USA Today: Box office seeing a few bright spots in sluggish summer - Robin Hood. It's easy to forget about this Ridley Scott-Russell Crowe project that was to continue Iron Man 2's kickoff to summer. Instead it opened in second place and seemed to disappear. But the 21/2-hour drama earned $103.3 million domestically and, more impressively, nearly $200 million overseas, thanks to a canny release pattern. "We knew the story was going to work overseas, and Ridley and Russell are huge global stars," says Nikki Rocco, president of distribution for Universal Pictures, which released Robin Hood. "But we knew we had to get the film out there early, because soon the world was going to be watching soccer." - Thanks, Judy

PopMatters.com: A Is for Actor, B Is for Band: Breaking the Stigma of the “Actor’s Band” -- ", when a well-respected dramatic actor like Russell Crowe went on tour with 30 Odd Foot of Grunts, even the actor’s fans, let alone the press, perceived the music as a famous actor’s pastime. The band received mixed reviews for its musicality, and it gradually faded away. Crowe’s musical interest, however, did not. He collaborated with award-winning Great Big Sea’s Alan Doyle to produce his 2006 CD, My Hand, My Heart. A second band, formed with Doyle as well as former members of 30 Odd Foot of Grunts, called themselves the Ordinary Fear of God on their Tonight Show debut, but nothing much happened afterward. The actor and his fame overshadowed the other band members. (Other than Great Big Sea fans who know Doyle’s stellar work as a singer/musician—or saw his recent role in Robin Hood—how many other band members are known to the public?)" - Thanks, Allison

Cinematical: Who is the biggest star in Hollywood? - I think Johnny Depp (#11) still has some goodwill, but he's no longer exciting. The second and third Pirates movies were huge hits but were quite bad, and his last few collaborations with Tim Burton have begun to feel stale, even to die-hard fans. In other words, our most dependable guys have recently begun to feel not-so-dependable. And, sorry folks, Leonardo DiCaprio is at #62, George Clooney is at #79, and Russell Crowe is all the way down at #132.

The Sunday Age au: Russell Crowe: The Biography - "...Alas, you won’t find answers to any of these questions in ‘‘entertainment journalist’’ Martin Howden’s thinly researched, blandly written and clumsily constructed biography. What should have provided readers with a chance to look beyond the celebrity chit-chat that too often passes for news is content simply to recycle it. Russell Crowe: The Biography is mostly made up of observations about the actor borrowed from the news media, film magazines, gossip rags and press kits written by PR people working for film companies." - Thanks, Sherezade

From Russell:
Folks,
after much tooing and froing and an unavoidable changes in other responsibilities, I am very sorry to tell you that The Ordinary Fear of God will not be touring in August this year.
Sentimentally it would have been great to mark the tenth anniversary of when we first played in Austin, but in reality it's not as important as other things.
You will be pleased to know though that Alan and I have locked in for May next year. We will be touring for 4 weeks. Sorry to those that are disappointed but we will make it up to you next May. - RC

From the Writers Almanac: Today is the summer solstice, and the first day of summer. It is the longest day and the shortest night of the year in the Northern hemisphere, not because the planet is closer to the sun than on other days of the year, but because it is tilted on its axis so that the northern part receives more direct sunlight.

Box Office Mojo: Robin Hood retreated 45 percent and grossed an estimated $13.6 million four-day, lifting its total to $86.3 million in 18 days. While not terribly exciting as summer movies go, that's solid for the Medieval Times: it's now the second highest-grossing picture of the sub-genre behind Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, and it has summarily trumped the final estimated attendance figures of past titles like King Arthur and Kingdom of Heaven.
