NBC Universal did not respond to requests for comment.Korniloff is a retired NYC DEA agent, who is demanding a retraction of statements made in the movie. The letter claims that the movie, which portrays the life of Frank Lucas (Denzel), a Harlem heroin dealer in the '60s and '70s, incorrectly states that a third of NY DEA agents were convicted on charges related to Lucas. In addition, the letter alleges that several alleged facts in the movie are misleading, including heroin being smuggled in coffins, and the amount of money taken from Lucas' home during a raid. Korniloff was the case agent for the DEA and "personally participated in the search of Lucas' house ... and the arrest of Lucas on that same day." Russell said he insisted that this detail be shown in the film. Russell said that while Baer was not a practicing Jew, he was born to a Jewish mother. Russell said he learned about Baer from Norman Mailer. Der Spiegel on AG (in German) - Thanks, cabes The online Journal-isms column by Richard Prince has compiled comments from a variety of black writers who have lashed out at the movie for exalting former drug lord Frank Lucas. Elmer Smith in the Philadelphia Daily News commented that it lifted "lowlife to new heights for a generation that doesn't remember or even care who they really were." Betty Bayé wrote in the Louisville Courier-Journal that she had talked to a friend, a former New York school teacher, who told her "Frank Lucas is the devil ... and some knuckleheads are going to go out and see that movie and think that they want to be just like him." Prince's column also quoted at length from a column in the New York Daily News by Stanley Crouch, who compared the movie with a documentary shown on BET. In the film, Crouch noted, "Frank Lucas has been given qualities that he simply did not have. We see him played as a soft-spoken and sophisticated man who closely studies the written word and only explodes into violence every now and then. In actuality, as the BET documentary reveals, Lucas was illiterate. ... He not only killed people to impress his ruthlessness on the underworld, but even put out a murder contract on one of his own brothers, whom he had brought from North Carolina to work in the drug trade with him. Lucas squashed the contract only because another brother had been killed and the drug lord did not want his mother to have to mourn for two dead sons at the same time. Always a family man. That such icy qualities are not in the movie makes it a highly crafted piece of poisonous eye candy." - Thanks, Allison (via the IMDb) On Norman Mailer's death - Russell says to his friend - "Vale Norman." As American Gangster hits theaters, cable network Showtime has announced Whitaker will play Harlem drug lord Leroy Barnes in a new drama series called Mr. Untouchable. November 3 Deadline Hollywood Daily: Friday: "I have early box office numbers for the top two movies tonight. I'm told Universal's American Gangster stole the show Friday by snatching $17+ million in domestic gross receipts at 3,054 theaters. The Imagine production filled with Oscar winners -- written by Steven Zaillian, directed by Ridley Scott and starring Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe -- should make "comfortably in the $40Ms" for the weekend and maybe even $50M. That makes this biopic drama the biggest R-rated motion picture opening in history for a movie that's more than 2 1/2-hours long (beating Troy's $46.8M and Gladiator's $34.8M). It's also Denzel's and Russell's biggest opening ever, and the second biggest drama in history to open in November (behind Eight Mile's $51.2M but ahead of Jarhead's $27.7M)." - Thanks flakeroo at MR AZ Central: Friends of man portrayed in 'Gangster' rave about film - Thanks, Cindy - The original article has a high school yearbook pic of Richie Roberts - Great flat top cut - Thanks, arilyn All Things Hi Def: Time for '3:10 to Yuma' on DVD and Blu-ray - Thanks, Cindy IMDb: Body of Lies page - More cast members - Thanks, Ivani The New York Observer: Girl on Film: Halloween Is Behind Us, But Gangster Continues the Bloodbath - American Gangster will remind you why we all made such a fuss over Mr. Crowe in the first place. Mr. Washington may have the showier hoo-ha part as the charismatic Frank Lucas, a notorious real-life Harlem hustler, but Mr. Crowe quietly shines as good guy cop Richie Roberts November 2 MTV Movies: "Denzel Washington is a hugely charismatic star, but here he's straitjacketed by his character's inscrutable conception, even after he's paired with the sympathetic Puerto Rican beauty queen (Lymari Nadal) who becomes his wife. This leaves Russell Crowe, an even more formidable actor, to effectively run off with the story. We can see Crowe thinking, and feel the inner turmoil that's wrecked his own family life, and we're drawn in by his rich, magnetic baritone. Even for Crowe, however, the picture's conflicted setup is tough going, and he can't push it as far as it would require to qualify as a gangster classic." AG - Seductive Crime - Review by Richard Schickel in Time: (Some historical insights) - "...Our love affair with wealth and fame is now untrammeled by doubts. It is our big good thing, and eventually Crowe's character, like the rest of us, must surrender to its cheerful demands. That makes American Gangster, which is rather leisurely paced but richly detailed in the way it pursues the minutiae of conspicuous criminality as well as consumption, a more disturbing movie than its makers may have intended. I don't think it attains the Godfather level — it lacks dark passion and grand-scale irony — but it is an intelligent, well-made and seductive movie." - Thanks, cabe s Rotten Tomatoes AG Page (For all the reviews) AG Review - The Wall Street Journal: "Lucas dominates the action, though that's not to suggest that Mr. Crowe is overmatched. (This formidable actor has never been overmatched, except by a few bad scripts.) He plays Richie as a perpetual high-school kid who happens to be fiercely intelligent. It's a big performance, and a beautifully modulated one -- I thought of Wallace Beery -- that makes the role seem more substantial than it is. During long stretches of the narrative, Richie's main function is to make shrewd assumptions about Lucas's M.O., which involves smuggling vast quantities of heroin into the United States inside caskets containing the remains of soldiers killed in Vietnam. (One of those assumptions leads to a thrilling sequence at a stateside air base.)" A link for Late Night TV - Russell's only remaining appearance is on Ellen on November 5. He is home in Australia now Hollywood Wire Tap: BEE' HAS STRONG BUZZ BUT 'GANGSTER' HAS PLENTY OF STING (VAR, FM) -- Although it’s hardly getting raves, advance buzz on Jerry Seinfeld’s “Bee Movie” is that it could top $40 million in its opening weekend. Meanwhile, Universal’s “American Gangster” is tracking close to $50 million. Coupled, the films could add some much-needed life into the domestic box office. With Mr. Washington as the title character—a powerful Harlem thug in fancy threads—with too many tiny roles built around him, there's too little time for the most compelling person: a policeman played by Russell Crowe." Based in rough outline on the flashy rise and fall of a powerful 1970s New York drug lord, Frank Lucas, the film has been built for importance, with a brand-name director, Ridley Scott, and two major stars, Denzel Washington as Lucas, and Russell Crowe as Richie Roberts, the New Jersey cop who brings him down. It’s a seductive package, crammed with all the on-screen and off-screen talent that big-studio money can buy, and filled with old soul and remixed funk that evoke the city back in the day, when heroin turned poor streets white and sometimes red....Mr. Crowe, his jaw thrust forward as aggressively as his pelvis, wears the white hat..."
