October 31 - Trick or Treat!

The Writers Almanac: "Today is Halloween, or All Hallows Eve, the time of the wandering dead. It's also a time for the young and the not-so-young to dress in outlandish attire and go door to door begging for candy. If you're looking for a scary story to read instead, there's no shortage of ghoulish material to choose from." Poe - Irving - Hawthorne - Lovecraft - Twain

thewaterdivinerfilm: Russell Crowe taps Jai Courtney for ‘The Water Diviner’ - "In a sense this character is where the story of The Water Diviner began. In 1920, the real “Hilton” wrote a letter to the war historian, Charles Bean, describing how an Australian father had come to Gallipoli looking for his son’s body. I showed the excerpt of the letter to Andrew Knight and immediately we became intrigued with this grieving dad. We built the story from there. There’s more about the seed of the idea in an earlier blog."

On TV: 5 P.M. (Sundance) A GOOD YEAR (2006) Russell Crowe reunites with the director Ridley Scott (“Gladiator”) in this celebration of French food and wine, adapted from Peter Mayle’s 2004 novel about Max Skinner, an aggressive London bond trader who inherits a small vineyard from his Uncle Henry (Albert Finney). Max (Mr. Crowe), soothed by the memories of summers spent amid the grapevines, soon morphs into a bon vivant who falls for a beautiful bistro owner (Marion Cotillard). Then a young Californian (Abbie Cornish) shows up and announces that she is Uncle Henry’s daughter — which would make her Henry’s true heir. Writing in The Times, Stephen Holden advised viewers “to make a reservation at an upscale French restaurant immediately after seeing the film or risk going home feeling deprived.” - Our trip to Bonnieux

10 P.M. tonight - (Cinemax) BROKEN CITY (2013) Nicholas Hostetler (Russell Crowe), a New York City mayor, hires Billy Taggart (Mark Wahlberg), a disgraced cop turned private detective, to expose the infidelities of his wife (Catherine Zeta-Jones) in this film noir, directed by Allen Hughes and written by Brian Tucker. But Billy always seems to be one step — or one gunshot — behind. “The screenplay remains the weak link in Mr. Hughes’s work,” Manohla Dargis wrote in The Times. “But if you don’t listen to the dialogue too hard, if you tune out a bit and instead watch the screen — notice how the restless cameras prowl around the actors, and how shards of bright color pierce the pooling black night — then ‘Broken City’ satisfies like the solid B movie it is.”
