There was a deafening silence on the streets of Detroit on the night of June 22, 1937, when Joe Louis was fighting heavyweight champion James J. Braddock at Comiskey Park in Chicago....

The Detroit News - It was the Super Bowl, World Series and Stanley Cup Finals wrapped into one big event for Detroiters, with three radio stations -- WWJ, WXYT and Windsor's CRCW -- carrying NBC's broadcast of the fight. It's a safe bet that few tuned in to "Poetic Melodies" on WJR, "Movie Chatter" on WEXL or "Ukrainian Hour" on WMBC....

Braddock, 31, who would be fighting for the first time in more than two years, was more outspoken. He believed Schmeling exposed Louis' vulnerability to the right hand and said that would be his ticket to a successful defense.
"I'll whip him with my right hand," Braddock said. His words almost rang true. Before the more than 55,000 fans got settled into their seats, a minute into the first round, Braddock sent Louis to the canvas with a stinging right uppercut, prompting a roar from a crowd that considered the champion the sentimental favorite. ...
