Beautiful

2004 Where else to start but with Russell Crowe? As part of the Post's ongoing Russell-watch, I'm happy to report that the brawny thespian just got that much better at sinking his teeth into his roles. Sources tell me the Oscar-winning Gladiator, in town to shoot Ron Howard's Cinderella Man, stopped in for some after-hours dental work on Tuesday. The maintenance on his leading-man fangs was done at the Bathurst Street offices of Ken Montague, a well-known dentist-to-the-stars who also runs a hip downtown art gallery in his spare time and has quite a thing for reggae. When I called to follow up on the dental scuttlebutt du jour, Montague confirmed that, yes, Crowe had dropped by, but declined to give any other details about the visit. What the good dentist did tell me was that the actor was very "witty and intelligent," and the two of them ping-ponged back and forth about their shared love of architecture. When he wasn't poking his fingers into Crowe's maw, that is. "I was astounded by how much he knew about Toronto," Montague told me over the phone. When, for instance, he happened to mention Don Mills, Crowe snapped right back, "Oh, over the Parkway, right?" Considering many Hollywood types who land in our parts never venture beyond Bistro 990, the A-lister's familiarity with the DVP is amazing. Though, on one level, it doesn't surprise me. Over the past couple of weeks, Crowe has been spotted all over the place, and the reports have all been positive, despite the actor's somewhat mercurial reputation. After celebrating his 40th birthday and one-year wedding anniversary last week at tip-top Bymark, while wife Danielle enjoyed a nice coffee and a good book back in Sydney, according to The Daily Telegraph, Crowe was seemingly everywhere over the weekend. He biked to the Beaches, where he stopped in at Aida's Falafel for a shawarma, according to one story, and held court on the sidewalk on College Street for a long time with some pals. He ain't being shy, let's just say. As for his teeth, I figure Crowe could be back in Montague's office before he knows it. His latest film is about a boxer. |
