Tsawwassen's seven-year-old Patrick Louis heads back to Toronto today for another month of filming for his role as Russell Crowe's and Renee Zellweger's child in Ron Howard's latest film, Cinderella Man, in production there since April.

Patrick got to spend a little time at home in the last few weeks during a break in filming of the movie, based on a true story.

He plays Howard, one of three children of James J. Braddock (played by Crowe) who went from poverty to fame in the depression era after defeating Max Baer and winning the 1935 world heavyweight boxing championship.

(The photo shows Patrick in costume on the steps of his trailer on the day his character's birthday party was shot.

"The chocolate on his face is from the cake, which he ate a lot of that day," laughs his dad.)

But getting the role wasn't a piece of cake. One of 900 North American kids up for the part, Patrick first auditioned for Cinderella Man on video last November.

In January, he auditioned in Vancouver in person, and in February, was asked to do another video audition before being called to a final audition in Toronto.

"His final audition was the most intense of his short career," says Louis.

In the room, scrutinizing his every move, were Howard, his producing partner Brian Grazer, Crowe and Zellweger.

"Fortunately, Patrick had no idea who these people were," jokes his dad.

The Hollywood types were impressed with how comfortable he was in front of the camera.

"Howard said he enjoyed Patrick's energy and saw how that energy would contribute to the film," adds Louis.

And Patrick gets along very well with Zellweger and Crowe.

"He has no idea how famous they really are, so he is very comfortable and casual with them. Renee is pleasant and warm with Patrick, and very generous and friendly all the time. Patrick just loves her. He thinks Russell is great too," says his dad.

Patrick has been acting since he was four years old -- he had roles in several commercials and in the movie, Air Bud V: Spike's Back.

Cinderella Man is his first major acting role.

The kid comes by his acting skills honestly -- his mom is an elementary music teacher and his dad a former high school drama teacher. His older siblings, Rachel and Dominic, have both been acting since they were five and have appeared in many Vancouver productions including Millennium, The Twilight Zone, The Dead Zone, So Weird, A Wrinkle in Time, Cold Squad, Outer Limits, and many commercials.

"Patrick loves acting. He loves being on set," says Louis. "He has enjoyed the six trips we have made so far and is looking forward to this final run before school starts."

Patrick, who loves reading and math, has been home-schooled until now, and is looking forward to entering Grade 2 at a local school next month.
