my beautiful boy.
this time last year i was on top of the ridge on mt.lourene that runs along the back of the farm.it was 3 1/2 weeks before you were due.
when i saw two vehicles peeling into the back paddocks my heart started racing,i knew you were coming.it took me 40mins to get to the first car.then we went to our emergency 'get back to sydney'plan.however, the best laid plans of mice and men don't mean a damn.
the helicopter was held up fuelling,in that time the wind rose to a 60-70km/ph headwind coming from the south.it took 3 1/2 hours to do a 2 hour flight.
your mother's waters broke at 8.30 or so in the morning,i saw the cars around 9am,got to the main house around 10,chopper booked to arrive at 11,didn't get to the farm until 1pm,we landed in sydney at 4.30 i was just hoping your mum hadn't left for the hospital without me,she hadn't.she had waited.everything happened very fast after that.
we got to the hospital around 5.30,they were sure pleased to see your mum,they'd been expecting her hours before.
she had her parents and a midwife urging her to go to the hospital,but she didn't want to go to the hospital without your dad,she was super cool and stuck to the plan.
you were born at 7 mins to 7 on the 21st of december,one year ago today and i can truly tell you it has been the most wonderful year of our lives.you are a very special little boy,so affectionate and lovely.
i'm going to wake you up in a minute and give you your 1st birthday bottle,then later mum and i will take you on the harbour for breakfast,this afternoon your grandparents will come over and spoil the birthday boy rotten.

G'day Mate from Canada. I just wanted to wish you a very Happy Birthday, A Merry Christmas and A Happy Healthy New Year all in one fall swoop.
Now that that's out of the way we can get down to the business of why I am writing.
This past summer I met my neighbours 1 and a half year old son for the first time. He was just the cutest with his spiky blonde hair and his larger than life bright blue eyes. He was looking around the yard and trying to turn his head almost 100% of the way around without moving his body to watch a butterfly that fluttered by and he lost his balance a bit and then he righted himself and continued to watch the butterfly until the sun reflected on something and that caught his eye.
It was at that moment that I understood what Russell meant about looking into his sons' eyes and seeing who he is. ("I'm just looking forward to meeting him and looking in his eyes and seeing who he is"- Russell Crowe 2003 Tonight Show or Oprah) It is a great miracle to see the world once again through a child's eyes and realize that even as an adult there are so many things we miss because we are too busy, too tired, dont have enough time, don't want to take the time or don't actually have our eyes open wide enough in the first place to see what is really there for us to see. It's also like one of my former art teachers used to say: Draw what you SEE NOT WHAT YOU THINK YOU SEE! I'm only 26 but it was still such an amazing moment to realize that I have alot more years in which to OPEN my EYES alot wider and really see.
So after all that Charlie I just want to say thanks to you and your mom Danielle and dad Russell for constantly continuing to inspire me at every turn. Because it’s my birthday , Dad thought “Let’s remember
The day you arrived in our lives last December.”
I wasn’t expected until the new year,
Three more weeks and a half to be fully mature.
I was so snug, curled up sucking my toes….
Who pulled the plug out?... nobody knows.
Dad got quite frazzled when plans went awry..
Refuelling, late choppers and winds that were high.
Despite the bad timing Mum stayed cool and loose.
It must be the yoga..she’d sworn off the juice.
I knew they weren’t ready, but was sure they’d survive.
Besides..When you’re perfect..why wait to arrive?
Well. That was last year, and I’m now turning one.
I’m truly excited by all that I’ve done.
I babbled and cooed and liked playing with sound.
Sounds grew into words, which are useful, I’ve found.
“mama” and “dada” came into my patter..
Mum coached the former and Daddy, the latter.
I still suck my toes but I now prefer jelly.
I love to have raspberries blown on my belly.
I’ll grip on your hair as I give you a kiss.
I’ll bang things together though sometimes I’ll miss.
Bright , shiny toys may not keep my attention
But the paper they’re wrapped in’s the greatest invention!
I’ve learned that I’m valued , unique and quite precious,
That I’m good to spend time with and laughter’s infectious.
I’ve learned that I’m special, my smile is a treasure,
I’ve learned I can trust that I’m loved beyond measure.

You are a blessing to your mum and dad and the world.
You came down from your spot in the Heavens because you have a destiny to fufil here on earth. It is one of joy, love, creativity and enlightenment. Your first year has been filled with many monumental things as far as your growth is concerned. And you have so many years like this past one, to follow.
In another year, you'll be walking and talking and marvelling at the way your body moves and the sound of your own voice as you speak, "Mum," "Dad" and your mouth forms the words that you want to say to convey your wants and needs. You may stumble and fall but being the strong boy you are, it won't stop you. It will only motivate you to keep on going.
In a few more years, you may be in Pre-school and learning how to socialize with other children your age. And then you'll go to Kindergarten and then Elementary school where playing soccer with your friends in your spare time, and being "Spiderman" will fill your imagination and make you wonder what it is that you want to be when you grow up.
Just remember that life doesn't have to be hard. It can be one filled with love, light, happiness and continous growth. It's up to you to choose which path you will follow.
And for Mom and Dad...as a parent of a 7 year old boy, I know what lies in store for you, for the next 6 years. There will be many questions about what life is all about; why do spiders spin so many webs, do cats understand what we say to them, and if a church is God's house why don't we ever actually see God when we visit him? There will be lengthly discussions about various professional sports personalities (my son is into hockey now), and why girls are such yucky creatures (mums do not count for some reason, maybe because we make sure that they have clean clothes, food to eat and soothe them when they wake up at night after having bad dreams). There will be soccer games to attend in the summer as we encourage them to keep going during the last game of the Finals, even though it's hot outside and they're dragging their little feet. There's nights when they have to study for the next day's spelling test and they're so frustrated because they can't quite spell the word Christmas and they just want to go to bed. And then there will be the times when they come up to us and for no reason, wrap their small arms around us and say, "I love you!"
