DVD Talk: A review of the newly released series Chancer on DVD -- "Like some souped-up modern take on Fielding's Tom Jones, 1990's Chancer: Series 1, the thirteen episode series from Britain's Granada Television, is a marvelously involving soaper starring Clive Owen in what the DVD box claims was his breakout role. When this witty, delightfully convoluted drama sticks to the main subplot - the rise, fall, and rise...and then fall (?) of charming, sexy swindler Stephen Crane - it's enormously entertaining." - Thanks, Steph --- You can pre-order the DVDs at Amazon - coming in July (See my Chancer pages)

Rotten Tomatoes: "Of course, by stroke of coincidence we learned just before we sat down with Miller that Robert Rodriguez had been signed onto a remake of the classic sixties sex flick "Barbarella." So what of "Sin City 2"? Rumours swirl that the project has been stalled by the breakdown of Rodriguez' marriage. "Sin City 2 is still likely to happen," says Miller, "just not right away. The script is written and Robert and I are raring to go, but it looks like I'm going to be doing The Spirit first and Robert's going to be doing Barbarella first." - Thanks, Steph

From Sara: "Here's a review in the weekend-issue of the "Guardian" of Clive's ITV-intro: "Boys done good (in the studio) TV has taken some criticism down the years for its football coverage, and last year I took it to task for overly biased coverage of the Arsenal-Barcelona Champions League final. But this year the studio team got the balance right between supporting the British team (in this case Liverpool) and reporting reality. Even the build-up, which is often little more than packaging for the advert breaks, was slick and engaging. Clive Owen, still dressed in his Croupier suit, did a Kiplingesque turn: 'Now the Turkish dust has settled but the echoes still reverberate ...' (echoes have a habit of doing that). Kenny Dalglish was at his most loquacious - sometimes packing his sentences with as many as four or five words. And Steve Rider made generous use of his insurance-salesman smile. All in all a satisfying evening."

The Australian: US snaps up Aussie movie - Thanks, Doro, Steph-- and here is more from Doro: But I come bearing more good news! I managed to purchase Simon Carr's book of the same title as the film in its original cover. Maybe you are interested in the text inserted in the inlet page of the wrapping: "We are a father and two sons living in a household without women" "We are like an experiment in a satellite, free of normal earthly influences (like guilt, and bleach, and sock drawers). We've been way off the norm, well outside the boundaries - so we know all about the hog-heaven theory of childhood" 'We are very widely experienced in the world where boys sit on the carpet gaping at television like cultish prisoners. We've known Sunday nights when you can't see the carpet for video boxes, takeaway packaging, clothes, plastic games, cats, goggles, guns, popcorn, plates, cutlery, papers, paintbrushes, cushions, soft toys, comics, newspapers, dart-launchers, picture books, colouring sheets, crayons, lego, and game CDs called Living Dead, Crypt and Resident Evil 2 where innocent bystanders are eaten alive by hungry zombies" 'We've lived for years now in a whole new, all-male institution. Given its inadequacies as a child-rearing unit, I like it. It's so different from a household run by a woman. It's home alone, except that there are three of us" After Simon Carr's second wife, Susie, dies, he brings up his two sons (one from a previous marriage) in a domestic set-up he describes as 'free-ragne' and visiting mothers prefer the term 'semi-feral'. The account of this experience is, by turns, funny, tender, anarchic, moving and very instructive about how three males of different ages and character learn from each other about how to live their lives.

Gamespot.com: Sin City: The Game coming -- California-based developer and publisher Red Mile nabs games licence for the gritty series of noir graphic novels. - Thanks, Steph

The Guardian: Liverpool/Milan -- ITV, meanwhile, had hired a proper actor, Clive Owen, to recite some overblown quasi-poetic guff over a backdrop of Athens' historic monuments. It was full of lines about "the city of gods and heroes", Milan trying "to heal the mental scars of 2005" and "when the Istanbul dust has settled" and so on. Stirring stuff, the effect of which was slightly spoiled by pundit Kenny Dalglish following it with "I don't think it'll live up to expectations" and winning this year's British bathos award. - Thanks, Steph

Golden Age Diary - May 22: "...Golden Age, on the other hand is about Immortality. It is about absolute Power and the aspiring to Divinity. To go beyond the ordinairy and to be Divine. Almost immortal. It is about Elizabeth becoming the Divine, the Immortal being she is percieved as today." - Thanks, RPH QT

CHUD: (Cannes) - Does that mean you'll get over to Athens to see Liverpool beat Milan? --- Malcolm Mcdowell ( A Clockwork Orange , I'll sleep when I am dead) : I wish to God I was going, but of course I won't be going in person. But I will be in some bar in Cannes watching it. And my mate Clive Owen that b... has got tickets and he didn't want to share them with me. So, but he's going, and we'll be shouting our hearts out for Liverpool FC. - Thanks, Steph

The Guardian - (Clothes related) -The gentle touch -- "A child in Mussolini's Italy, Giorgio Armani grew up to be a fashion revolutionary. He liberated men and women from the straitjacket of traditional tailoring and introduced them to the pleasures of casual chic. Yet he is himself a perfectionist who wields complete control over what has become a worldwide brand. Suzie Mackenzie shadows him through a very public New York visit to discover what drives the private Mr Armani" - Thanks, Kathleen

Cinematical: Frank Miller Wants Samuel L. Jackson to Be His Octopus - "The way I see it, there's really only one guy who has what it takes to play The Spirit -- and I truly hope Miller hears my plea, because Clive Owen needs to star in this film. That's it, case closed. It's Clive. No need to cycle through a ton of names here -- just go get him. Pic is expected to begin shooting this fall, with Lionsgate onboard to distribute. There's no word on a release date, but here's hoping they can get this thing in good-enough shape to shovel it into theaters by Christmas, 2008." - Thanks, Steph

I've started a thread at the Murphsplace forum called "Original Poetry. There is a section for poems - original - with Clive as the inspiration

Hello Magazine: Armani muse Lady Helen Taylor led a roll-call of famous faces helping raise funds for poorly children at London's chic Sanderson hotel on Tuesday night. Among them was fellow Giorgio fan Clive Owen - set to return to UK TV (?) screens in the upcoming sequel to Elizabeth (ed note: get your facts right, Hello!) - who was spotted catching up with Clic Sargent ambassador Lady Helen at the celebrity studded affair. - With pictures - Thanks, Steph, Marg

Hypnose Homme: Who's that good looking guy? - Here he is again - Thanks, Cindy

UGO: Clive Owen tapped for International (From April 17) - "Clive Owen is no stranger to starring in thrillers, with his work on Sin City, Inside Man and Children of Men being nothing less than top-notch. Now, Clive Owen is going a little more international with his next project, The International, where Clive Owen will showcase his acting ability as an Interpol agent." - Thanks, mylosh

Cinematical: Second Sight -- Almost ten years after the miniseries got off the ground, Universal is planning a feature film adaptation. The deal, which is not yet finalized, plans to have Susan Montford and Don Murphy of Angry Films produce with the original series creator, Paula Milne, executive producing. Considering the fact that Montford and Murphy are producing Owen's upcoming Shoot 'Em Up, I'd say that there's a good chance that the actor will reprise his role. - Thanks, mylosh

Variety: Wong Kar Wai: Advertising director (The Lancome commercial) - Thanks, Steph, mylosh

The Observer: London: a capital place for panic attacks -- "...One of the most impressive films of last year was Alfonso Cuaron's Children of Men, a gripping, dystopian nightmare adapted from a novel by PD James (via the legacy of Nigel Kneale) which posits a desolate vision of a near-future world in which human reproduction has become a dying art. Beautifully filmed in battle-scarred, colour-drained hues by cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki, Cuaron's apocalyptic vision of this grey and unpleasant land charts a grim map of Britain which includes haunting footage of the once-magnificent Battersea Power Station, and climaxes in a Hadean vision of Bexhill-on-Sea which most closely resembles wartorn Bosnia. Danny Boyle agrees that Children of Men exists within the same tradition as 28 Weeks Later, and points out that both films are significantly directed and photographed by non-British film-makers who are able to observe the strangeness of this land and its culture with the intelligent empathy of an outsider's eye."

EW.com: The top 25 sci-fi movies and TV from the past 25 years (COM #14) - Thanks, Donna

The Boston Globe re the HBO Mini Series on the Red Sox: "And if you're already casting the characters in this small screen send-up, you're not alone. Werner kidded that he could be played by George Clooney; John Henry by James Woods; Theo Epstein by Adrian Grenier; and Larry Lucchino by Clive Owen. "At least that's who Larry Lucchino thinks should play Larry Lucchino," Werner said, laughing. And the ballplayers? Werner said one wag suggested the role of Manny Ramirez go to Whoopi Goldberg. (Might we suggest Manny be Manny?) Asked if the movie could cause the current team to lose focus on the field, Werner said no. "Part of our responsibility is to keep the Red Sox brand as strong as possible," he said, "and the triumph of '04 is quite a remarkable story."

Coming Soon.net: Smokin' Aces director Joe Carnahan revealed on his official Blog that Robert Rodriguez gave him a sneak peek at Sin City 2: Robert Rodriguez stopped by the office yesterday and showed me what may become the teaser for 'SIN CITY 2' and HOLY SH*T is it something. I don't want to let any cats out of any bags, so all I can say is there's not a hetero male moviegoer alive that's not going to deeply DIG that spot. Remember, he's doing 'A Dame To Kill For' and brother has he got it. That guy's enthusiasm for filmmaking is infectious too. A solid bloke and a good soul. The second "Sin City" book, "A Dame to Kill For," is an earlier story of Dwight McCarthy (Clive Owen's character), whose life is turned upside down when Ava, a woman from his past returns, saying she loves him and causing all sorts of problems for him.
