The Orlando Sentinel: Book does right thing in telling Lee's story (Spike Lee book)

Clive is number 37 in Company magazine "100 sexiest men" this month. - Thanks, Emma

The Chicago Tribune: Kathy Griffin: From red carpet to black comedy -- If there was anything funnier in the last year than Kathy Griffin on the red carpet at the Golden Globes awards in January, I didn't see it. Griffin, a stand-up comic, reality-TV host and former "Suddenly Susan" star, goofed on celebrity worship by asking Clive Owen if he'd had plastic surgery on his ears and greeting another actor with the question, "Do you guys have any weed?" - Thanks, Steph

Cinematical on the supposed finalists for Bond: "...Most interestingly, according to the Telegraph, "The auditions have reached their most important stage: how the actors fare in the sack. So stand-in Bond girls have been hired to act out select love scenes from past Bond films with the final four actors." We can only hope that a) these porn-ditions eventually make it to the web, and b), that Clive Owen is somehow involved."

Islington Gazette: Kings Heads Theatre Founder Dies -- "...It became London's most popular fringe venue and a place where forgotten works could be revived. Actors such as Clive Owen, Lily Savage and Corin Redgrave have all performed there. It also helped launch the careers of Hugh Grant, John Sessions and various members of the Monty Pyton team."

From the Filmink newsletter:

Every once in a while, a film comes along that literally pastes you back in your seat when you see it. A film that peels back your eyelids and makes you painfully, shockingly aware that you’re watching an honest-to-god movie, and not merely a money making exercise dreamed up by a committee of people for whom “creativity” and “originality” are foul, dirty words. The kind of people who greenlight films like The Stepford Wives and A Shark’s Tale – both of which are pretty much 90-minute commercials for everything that is truly wrong with the Hollywood film industry. Some segments of the local media are all too ready to put the knife into Australian cinema, but what about some of the films Hollywood makes? Rubbish like Van Helsing and The Terminal?
But sometimes an American film comes along that makes you forget about efforts like that. Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller’s Sin City is that kind of film. While it may not have the emotional resonance or classic storytelling sense of something like Million Dollar Baby, it does have originality, creativity and courage to burn. Ripped from the pages of Frank Miller’s graphic novel, this bleak but funny hellish tour de force uses digital technology in a fresh and seamless way, and breaks new ground at every turn. Throughout the magazine this month, we talk to some of the major players – directors Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller, composer Graeme Revell, and stars Mickey Rourke, Bruce Willis, Clive Owen, Michael Madsen and Brittany Murphy – about putting this crazy jigsaw together.

The Orlando Sentinel - A story on Ioan Gruffudd: "...Of course, if the rumors are true about him being in the running to be the new James Bond, well, he'll need to be a little frightening. "That's an incredibly flattering rumor, that one. Nothing more to it than that, but I love hearing it. Clive Owen [who played King Arthur] is, of course, another name that comes up. But when we were making King Arthur, we never even mentioned our Bond chances. "I'm sure the rumors with him are just as they are with me, all created by the press. But it's flattering to the both of us. I think Clive has a better shot at it because he has more weight and gravity and he's a little bit older. And he's scarier."

Richard Roeper in the Chicago Sun Times: (Scroll) "...The last decent James Bond movie was "Goldeneye" in 1995. The last stellar James Bond movie was "For Your Eyes Only" in 1981. It's been nearly 30 years since the franchise was in its prime, with Sean Connery defining the role. What are you going to do now -- engage in the same tired, leering banter with a babe with a single-entendre name before you take on some madman who wants to blow up the world and leaves you to die via some elaborate means? Yawn. If I'm a talented star on the rise such as Craig or Owen, I'd sprint away from the Bond franchise as fast as possible." [Ed note: I agree!]

From a poster at the Murphsplace Forum: "I work as a film critic. We have a list of films that are updated as movies begin production and/or get financing. "Inside Man" has already been on that list for a little while, but I noticed today that "Children of Men" has been added. So their money must all be in place now and are officially in preproduction."

From ligeia at the murphsplace forum: "I was browsing through a book called City Secrets London and noticed a passage contributed by Patrick Marber on Postman's Park and the Watts memorial, the small park pivotal to a key plot element in Closer and where they shot some of the movie. Has anyone been to visit? If you're interested in checking it out, it's located at King Edward Street EC1, next door to St. Botolph's Church, and about a minute away from St. Paul's Cathedral. You get off the St. Paul's stop on the Underground."

From AICN: "Hey folks, Harry here with a story that Michael Fleming over at Variety broke. Apparently - De Palma... being a huge fan of AICN's Capone, has decided to make a prequel film to focus exclusively on his early movie reviewin... oh... wait, it's a prequel to THE UNTOUCHABLES called THE UNTOUCHABLES: CAPONE RISING - terrible title. I'm dying to see Brian's THE BLACK DAHLIA... and as for this... who the hell do you have play the young versions of Deniro's Capone and Connery's Johnny Malone. I guess for Connery - you'd pretty much have to go for Clive Owens [sic] - but would he want to take over the part that Sean won an Academy Award for? As for young Deniro... I don't think we have one of those today. Hope to god the script to this is amazing."

Variety: MAN ON THE 'INSIDE' - Ejiofor teams with Washington on cop pic: "Dirty Pretty Things" star Chiwetel Ejiofor will play Denzel Washington's cop partner in "The Inside Man," the Imagine Entertainment drama that Spike Lee is directing and Brian Grazer's producing for Univeral.

Another report from Time Out London: "Clive Owen to play Sir Walter Raleigh - Clive Owen to join Cate Blanchett for sequel to 'Elizabeth'" (Still waiting for Variety or the Hollywood Reporter to confirm this)

From Kyle: "Maybe this will help straighten things out… " Apparently there are THREE versions of the story being filmed… we have one version with Helen Mirren as Elizabeth (this is the version that Irons and Dancy are in), one version with Anne Marie Duff as Elizabeth, and one version with Cate Blanchett as Elizabeth (co-starring Clive Owen)…ContactMusic is often unreliable because they rarely list sources for their information… I'd say they got their stories crossed again this time..."

The private dinner drew a high-profile crowd, including the handsome Clive Owen, who much to the amazement of the other women on hand, went unrecognized by Vodianova. From Doro: The Sin City II start date has moved to the earlier start date of February 2006 (IMDb Pro) -- While watching tv tonight I came across an announcement that 'Chancer' is repeated on ITV3 as of Wednesday, 8 June at 10 pm. This may be particularly useful for UK Clive Owen fans.

The Post-Gazette: Creative forces from Pittsburgh: "Homewood native Antoine Fuqua, who has directed some of Hollywood's strongest men -- Clive Owen in "King Arthur," Bruce Willis in "Tears of the Sun" and Denzel Washington in "Training Day." Next: "Under and Alone" with Mel Gibson."

Cherwell on line: (new interview) - "Today, Clive Owen looks like someone you could feasibly see working behind the camera as much as in front of it. While he has that rare quality of actually being more attractive in real life than he appears onscreen, on this balmy afternoon he has a slightly weary, haggard look about him, somewhat akin to that which his harassed publicity people are displaying. His linen suit is a little too crushed, his trousers seem just that bit too short, his eyes appear worn and downbeat. Although his appearance today probably has more to do with having just stepped off a plane from Cannes, following a punishing schedule at the famed film festival, as opposed to tearing up the town Paris Hilton-style. And, well, maybe just a little to do with Arsenal’s triumphant performance over the weekend...(Read on)" Thanks, Steph

And on Sin City...

From Genevieve: "I thought you -- and perhaps other fans -- might be interested in knowing that The Movie Store has added quite a few new photos of Clive. (See left) It's a lot cheaper to purchase them directly from the store's web site than to engage on a bidding war on eBay where "re-sellers" list the exact same shots. I can vouch for their quality and service."

Also from Genevieve: "The June 2005 issue #1 of a new UK film magazine titled "British Film" features an interesting interview of Clive (same questions were asked to Jude Law) In the same issue Clive is listed as one of the top 30 British actors, there's also a snippet about Sin City (with a picture of Dwight) and a small photo of him at the BAFTAS, so you get plenty for your money."

The Globe and Mail (Canada):THURSDAY - The Return of the Native (1994) Bravo!, 9 p.m. -- "In this Thomas Hardy story Catherine Zeta-Jones plays Eustacia Vye living in 1840s rural England and bored out of her tree. "Life is so drab on this awful heath," she sighs, before adding, "A man of roguish reputation is like a fresh breath of air." But while the swarthy and clearly horny Damon Wildeve (Clive Owen) woos her with promises of escape, she takes instead the hand of Clym Yeobright (Ray Stevenson), who has recently returned from Paris where she hopes they'll emigrate together. When Clym's horizons are not so grand, and Eustacia's hopes are thwarted, the consequences, Hardy-like, build toward the catastrophic as Clym's ill-fated mother (Joan Plowright) is a fine old meddler."

The Detroit Free Press: Best bets for Thursday -- ""Second Sight" (9 p.m., BBC America). New sleuth alert. Suave British actor Clive Owen ("Sin City," "The Closer") is Detective Chief Inspector Ross Tanner, a highly respected cop facing a crisis that could end his career in this new mystery series. Assigned to investigate the brutal murder of a teenage boy, DCI Tanner discovers that he's losing his sight because of a rare eye condition. Sightless crime fighters? James Franciscus played a blind insurance investigator on "Longstreet" in the 1970s and Ron Eldard is portraying a blind NYPD detective on ABC's "Blind Justice." But while they were totally blind, Owen's cop is in denial about his deteriorating condition. The evidence points to a cool sleuth in a tense whodunit predicament." (The "new sleuth alert" is really an error. SS aired on USA PBS stations a few years ago.)

From Nick at www.nicksharman.co.uk: Could you put something on your site asking people to contact comments@world-productions.com and beg them to put Sharman on DVD?

Variety: Lee, Schulberg taking on 'Louis' - By ARMY ARCHERD: "GOOD MORNING: Spike Lee starts "Save Us Joe Louis," his long-planned Joe Louis feature, immediately after completing "Inside Man" with Denzel Washington, Jodie Foster and Clive Owen for producer Brian Grazer at Universal. Lee and Budd Schulberg have been working (writing) the Joe Louis project for five years. It's the story of the two Louis-Max Schmeling championship bouts (1936 and 1938) and the global ramifications. Lee says characters involved in the pic will include FDR, Hitler, Mussolini and Sugar Ray Robinson for starters, adding Schulberg was on hand for the 1938 fight. Lee tells me, "Budd (93) is going strong. This is a David Lean caliber film." As for "Inside Man," he said, "this is an intelligent bank heist film -- no shooting. It's about criminals who use their brains, not guns." When I spoke with Lee last week, he was readying to take his "Inside Man" co-star Clive Owen to see Denzel Washington (whom Lee has directed three times previously) in "Julius Caesar" at the Belasco. Lee directs his 15 mins. seg for "All the Invisible Children" this week." Thanks, Bea

Photoshop artists take note: Cinematical is holding a Photoshop contest for images of the perfect Bond.

From Book Standard (Scroll): "Universal will also adapt a sci-fi thriller from mystery writer P.D. James, with Children of Men, to be co-produced by Strike Entertainment. Clive Owen, who will appear in another upcoming literary adaptation, of James Siegel’s Derailed (currently in post-production and also starring Jennifer Aniston), will star in the Alfonso Cuarón–directed film. The Mexican director continues to crank out the lit-adaptations (Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Great Expectations, A Little Princess) with three major adaptations coming in ’06: The History of Love, by Nicole Krauss; Life of Pi, by Yann Martell (to be scripted by M. Night Shyamalan); and Memory of Running, by Ron McLarty. The script for Children of Men was originally written by Paul Chart and reworked by Mark Fergus and Hawk Otsby, following rewrites by Cuarón, Timothy Sexton and David Arata." Thanks, Chris K

Bit of news at AICN on The Inside Man from Spike Lee. So Clive will be in NYC all summer...

The NY Observer: "Anyway, if the eye-squishing is the emblematic moment of the Cinema of Stupidity, then the most recent flowering of the Cinema of Stupidity is the widely acclaimed Sin City, a film which shows all the hallmarks of Late Tarantino (including the fact that he’s billed as "guest director" along with longtime collaborator Robert Rodriguez)."

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Clive Owen, whose supporting performance in "Closer" earned him an Oscar nomination, has signed on to topline "Children of Men" for Strike Entertainment and Universal Pictures. Alfonso Cuaron ("Y tu mama tambien," " Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban") is directing the feature film adaptation of the book by mystery writer by P.D. James. "Children of Men" takes place in the near future, when mankind has lost the ability to procreate and the world is rocked by the news that the youngest person on Earth -- who is 18 years old -- has died. As chaos erupts, a former radical (Owen) becomes protector of the most sought-after person on the planet -- the first pregnant woman in almost 20 years. The project initially was scripted by Paul Chart and then rewritten by Mark Fergus and Hawk Otsby. Cuaron had rewritten it with his writing partner Timothy Sexton and David Arata. Owen is on screens in the current release "Sin City." His upcoming films include the thriller "Derailed," with Jennifer Aniston, and he has just signed on to star in Spike Lee's "Inside Man" with Denzel Washington and Jodie Foster. BBC America has a Second Sight Clip. Thanks, Jinete

MTV.com: Melissa George on Clive as Bond -- Clive Owen "would be perfect," she said of her leading man on the set of the upcoming drama "Derailed." "He's just a charming brute, and he's got that swagger and that 'man' feel about him. He's a brilliant actor and he's got this humor as well. Everything that a 'Bond' man is." - Thanks, Chris

From a press release for the BMW M5: ‘Roadmonster’ also includes a link through to www.bmwfilms.com, BMW’s critically acclaimed series of short films that featured Madonna, Clive Owen and an E39 M5 in a Guy Ritchie directed film, Star. The world’s most famous female pop star plays a clichéd ‘difficult’ celebrity, but it is the M5, with Owen at the wheel, that is the real star.

You can pre-order a Minette Walters DVD from Amazon UK (Region 2 PAL version). It includes Clive's The Echo, and Craig's The Ice House. (Click on info in right column to pre-order through this site.)

Don't forget to check the Cannes Festival (May 11-22) for Sin City news, and Clive's appearance.

BBC3 - The Essential Top 50 (Video clip of Clive at #37.) Thanks to keiraweb.com

4/23 - The Weekend Australian - Sound and Fury - Interesting story on Shakespeae and the actors who have appeared in his plays: "...Maybe it's because his vulnerability is part of his sexual magnetism but I think I would rather see Law play Hamlet than other actors - his Closer co-star Clive Owen, say, or Russell Crowe, whom you might admire as much or more - simply because he seems so suited to the role."

ETToday - Cannes -- "A quick look at nominated films shows that this year’s Cannes Film Festival will have fewer Hollywood stars than last year. Two that will be turning up are Bruce Willis and Clive Owen, best supporting actor at the Hong Kong Film Awards, in the animated feature Sin City." - Thanks, Kyle
