Raleigh is an adventurer with a dream - a dream that offers a new life in a new world, an apparent Eden untouched by the political and religious strife of Europe. As such he shows the Queen the wonders to be had there - the strange vegetable he is (apocryphally) credited with having introduced to Ireland, the potato, and a leaf the Virginian natives smoked, tobacco, which he certainly greatly helped to popularise in England. He also brings with him two native Americans, Manteo and Wanchese, who are actually attested in England at this time and no doubt added greatly both to the exotic reputation of the court and Raleigh's sales pitch. But it is the last gift he presents to the Queen that hints at the other side to Raleigh's character - Spanish gold. Interesting literary info about Raleigh from Wikipedia: "The
School of Night (mentioned in
the Kapur diary comments) was a cabal of men centered
on Sir Walter Raleigh. They were a collection of poets
and scientists who included Christopher Marlowe, George Chapman,
Thomas Hariot, Richard Baines (who testified against Marlowe
in his trial for atheism), and the assassin of Marlowe, Ingram
Frizer. They studied science, philosophy, and religion, and all
were suspected of atheism. William Shakespeare seems to refer
to them in Love's Labour's Lost when he says, ". . . Black
is the badge of hell/ The hue of dungeons and the School of Night." Atheism
at that time was a charge nearly the equivalent of treason, since
the monarch was the head of the church and to be against the
church was, ipso facto, to be against the monarch. However,
it was also a sign of anarchy, and it was a charge frequently
brought against the politically troublesome. There is no reason
to believe that any of the figures were, or were not, atheists
or revolutionaries. -- References: Muriel C. Bradbrook, The

That's a big hit for Lee, and a very big hit for such an uncommonly intelligent and subtle Hollywood movie. As we near the year's halfway point, Inside Man is still my favorite movie of the 100-plus I've seen (not counting a couple of weeks off for the birth of my son, although the only really big movie I missed is Poseidon -- no big loss). I like Inside Man mainly because it wishes to say something about the way we live in the world today, but does so in a way that movies do best: by slipping its message inside a crackerjack thriller yarn. Much in the same way Hugo Weaving personified the vigilante V in V for Vendetta, Clive Owen proves that one does not have to show face to act brilliantly. Washington and Foster also turn in the expected strong performances, yet I couldn’t help but feel that the great Washington was coasting, merging aspects of characters that he’s played before. The end result is still electrifying, but oddly unsatisfying. As for Foster, she imbues Madeline White with a complete overload of bitch that is perfect for the role. It’s a complete turnaround from the shy, humble women forced into situations they must overcome that Foster has played recently. In its second frame, Inside Man grossed $15.7 million from 2,830 venues; it had an average of $5,544. The star-studded pic dropped 46% compared to its impressive debut of $29 million. According to the IMDb, the budget for Inside Man came in at $45 million, but the only way that is possible is if Denzel, Jodie Foster and Clive Owen deferred their salaries, so really, the higher the gross the higher the budget. The gross here is going to be big. Currently, the take for the Inside Man sits at $52.8 million, and even with the drop, this is still going to be easily a $100 million dollar film. So I says: 'I bet you can get a cab, though.' [It seems that most New York City cab drivers are from India.] That was adlibbed. Was it difficult for Owen to act, when no one can see his expressions? "It was very difficult as an actor but we just shot him as if the mask, you know, wasn't on." Lee searched for moments where he could show Owen unmasked, right? "Yeah, we went through the script and found like two or three more scenes where he doesn't have to be masked." At times you think you could be watching Owen's double, there's so little of him showing. Lee laughs. "Funny thing, he said the same thing: 'You don't need me, get my double.' He once said sport is simply another type of theatre. "It's funny that actors want to be singers or rappers or athletes, and the athletes want to be rappers or singers. It's all entertainment." Has he always loved sport? "Yes, yes, from a very young age." Did he want to be an athlete? "Yes, but that was early on and I got rid of that notion quick." What did he want to play? "Baseball." It also includes The Lynley Mysteries and Touching Evil 1 - Thanks, Kyle The Montgomery Advertiser: County, city purchase slick movie prop - "A state-of-the-art command post is only a bit player in the nation’s hottest movie, but it’s going to be a big star in Montgomery. City and county public safety departments plunked down $458,000 in federal homeland security funds to buy the command post seen in “Inside Man” starring Denzel Washington, Clive Owen and Jodie Foster. (The manufacturer shaved almost $40,000 off the asking price since it’s used — barely.) Variety: Auds turned out for "Inside Man" over the weekend, but "V for Vendetta" isn't holding up at all. U's "Man" posted a $29 million bow, star Denzel Washington's highest to date. Pic averaged $10,280 at 2,818 playdates to come in just behind the year's biggest opening, $30 million for "Madea's Family Reunion."... Proving moviegoers were hungry for a sophisticated thriller, "Inside Man" outperformed expectations by drawing heavily on adults: 68% of attendees were over 30. Male bias was slight: African-Americans drawn by helmer Spike Lee and star Denzel Washington were overrepresented at 21%. Week of 3/20/06 to 3/26/06 Reuters: Inside Man tops Box Office -- "Denzel Washington and director Spike Lee scored the best opening of their careers on Sunday, as the heist thriller "Inside Man" grabbed the No. 1 spot at the weekend box office in North America with estimated ticket sales of $29 million. The film, which also stars Clive Owen and Jodie Foster, was the top picture overseas as well, with sales of $9.6 million from 18 countries, including No. 1 openings in Britain and Germany, according to distributor Universal Pictures." Not that Owen is a thing like Newman, but rather because both men really have a grasp (if you’ve seen Empire Falls, you know Newman still does) on what they not only personally do best, but better than maybe anyone else in film. Owen’s the perpetual asshole in the same way that Newman’s the cocky, grinning, half-drunk ladies man. And like Newman, I’ll watch Owen in damn near anything, even a half-ass script with “Creesy-bear” stealing screen-time." The Boston Herald: New fame gets Clive Owen ‘Inside’ - By Stephen Schaefer - Thanks, Doro The Flick Filosopher (For USA residents) - Win a hat and T shirt from Inside Man (Write a caption) - Thanks, Doro Inside Man review - The NY Times - Manohla Dargis: "To watch Mr. Washington breeze into a scene smooth as silk, smooth as Bogart and Easy Rawlins combined, or to listen to Mr. Owen murmur sweet nothings into the camera, is to experience the ineffable pleasures that only big-screen stars can provide. Mr. Lee rarely treats his actresses or female characters as well as their male counterparts, but whether by design or neglect, he helps Ms. Foster deliver her wittiest, most relaxed performance in ages. Part Mata Hari, part Ilsa the She Wolf, she stalks the sets in form-fitting suits and nose-bleed heels that show off her spectacular legs wonderfully. (She could kill with those things!) In a story dominated by men, in which most of the women are either desexualized or double-D babes, her character presents an amusing fantasy of female power. One of those mysterioso brokers who circumvent both the law and the criminal element for the deepest pockets in town, Madeline isn't the equal of any man: she's superior. And you thought dominatrixes wore only black leather." Why, he even has a new enemy to blame Get links to all the Inside Man reviews at Rotten Tomatoes EW.com: Inside Man is a hybrid of studio action pic and Spike Lee joint. Or else it's a cross between a 2006 Spike Lee joint and a 1970s-style movie indictment of urban unease. It's also a blend of Dog Day Afternoon and a Foster tough-lady thriller; of a Foster thriller and a smooth Owen sleight-of-hand drama; and of an Owen caper and a Washington out-for-justice pic. Some unwieldy hybrid — and yet the gamble pays off. Everyone gets a piece of the deal. Everyone gets a piece of the city with the brutally changed skyline, in all its new paranoia. - Thanks, Steph DVD Verdict's review of The Derailed DVD - Thanks, Michael Another IM interview with Clive - The Ottawa Citizen - Thanks, Doro Cindy Adams - The NY Post - Hot shots come out for film opening (Not a mention of Clive!) - Thanks, Kris C Video of Clive on the Jon Stewart Show - Thanks to Kris C IM -- Time Out - London - Thanks, Doro Rolling Stone IM Review: "And watch the canny way that Owen, required to do a lot of acting behind a mask (shades of Hugo Weaving in V for Vendetta), brings nuance and wit to the robbery ringmaster. "This script landed [Shoot em up] and it was so inventive and so crazy and wild. It's an incredibly wild fresh, original script and an incredibly ingenious action movie where the lead character keeps being put in incredible situations. You can't believe he's going to get out of them, but somehow he does in very inventive ingenious [ways]. It starts with the guy delivering a baby in an alleyway with people shooting at him, and it doesn't let up for the next 90 minutes. I met the director and thought if someone can pull this off, this will be wild and extraordinary. I met him and I thought he could pull it off, because he had been planning this movie for seven years, and it's going really, really well. He's incredibly on top of it and organized and it's leaping off the page." - Thanks, Steph AskMen.com: Stealing Onscreen Styles: Clive Owen In Closer Emmanual Levy.com: Great article and comments from Spike on Inside Man - On Clive Owen - Clive Owen is great, and he took on a big risk, because the audience can't see his face. Denzel said it was hard for him to act with Clive because he fed off Clive's expressions, and there were scenes when his face was completely masked. To give the actors more "face" time and allow the audience into the clever robber's head, we carefully reviewed the script and found places where Owen's character could be filmed unmasked. - Thanks, mgill, Steph The Comicbook Bin: Inside Man review - Thanks, Steph Hello! The New Statesman: Trailer Trash -- "...I experienced this recently when I almost saw the trailer for Spike Lee's thriller Inside Man. As soon as it dawned on me that the movie looked intriguing, with an impressive cast (Clive Owen, Denzel Washington, Jodie Foster, Chiwetel Ejiofor), I screwed my eyes shut and clamped my hands over my ears. Other audience members may have interpreted this as a psychotic episode. For me it was insurance to protect the day when I see Inside Man. It may turn out that the film is dreadful, but at least my viewing experience will be unpolluted by knowing who did what to whom and why before I've even bought my ticket." The ever exceptional Clive Owen will surely do what he can with the rote role of dapper bank robber, matching wits with Washington's detective and, um, Jodie Foster, who apparently enjoys confined spaces." I really can't play opposite so many of today’s actors because they seem kind of feminine. They’re too groomed or something. But Clive is a real man. IGN.com: Sin City2: "Casting is still unknown, but "A Dame to Kill For" would bring back several characters from last film, including Gail, played by Rosario Dawson. Dwight, played by Clive Owen in the first film, is the star of "Dame". Funnily enough I read a script for another thriller about a week before I read the script for Derailed and I was told that I was really going to like it. It was a thriller with lots of twists and turns, and I didn't like it at all. It was very cleverly constructed but so contrived. I didn't buy the situation so I didn't know how to act it. Then I received the script for Derailed and it was a similar story in a way – I mean it was a psychological thriller – but I immediately understood it and knew I could play this guy. I understood his decision and why he does what he does." - Thanks, Steph The NY Times: School, sleepovers, Red Carpet dreams -- (Addison Timlin) "...Her first feature film, "Derailed," in which she played Clive Owen's diabetic daughter, opened nationwide in December. At one point, she said, Jennifer Aniston, the film's star, wrapped an arm around her and, like a celebrity fairy godmother, told Addison she thought she would go very far, and to "stay grounded." Written and directed by Michael Davis, Shoot ‘Em Up is described by Dark Horizons as “one of the most inventive action/gun fight movie scripts ever to be assembled with shootouts during both a sex scene and in the midst of a freefall.” The movie opens with Owen’s character, named only “Mr. Smith,” delivering a baby in the middle of a gunfight. The mother dies but the infant lives so Smith teams up with a prostitute (Bellucci) and goes on the run in a desperate attempt to save the baby’s life.
