Gillian's Report on the film and the Hodges Q & A: I'll sleep when I'm dead is a great film with it's main theme being revenge. Clive Owen gives a dark and brooding performance playing a brother returning to his former gangland life in south London when his younger brother (Jonathan Rhys Meyer) commits suicide. It is a thoughtful, dark film and has one scene which is a flash back to Get Carter, I won't spoil it by telling you. The cast is strong with good support performances by Ken Stott, Charlotte Rampling and Malcolm McDowell. At the screening before the film there was a brief introduction to the cast and director and then after the film there was a very interesting Q&A with Mike Hodges. He spoke about the difficulty in getting funding for films and about losing directoral control over his films and how happy he was with his new renaissence. He said he enjoyed working with both Clive and Jonathan and said the great thing about Clive is he can pace his performance so sometimes he goes up to ten and other times he's at six. He said the film required a slow burning performance and this was what Clive gave. He gave Clive the script just after Croupier but it had taken a while to get the funding. He also praised Jonathan's performance which he felt was enhanced as he hadn't seen the film for a few months and had forgotten how good Jonathan was. We could see Clive Owen from our seats and he seemed to be enjoying the film and the Q & A. His hair was very dark and dare I say almost a mullet but obviously this is for a film role!
