Kentucky.com: Cast against type --- Lunsford-Hart unlikely pair as film producers -- t's a busy night in the restaurant. Diners glance at a corner booth. There sits the familiar figure of Louisville businessman Bruce Lunsford. But next to him is an actor, Russell Crowe. Crowe hasn't attained superstar status yet, but people know him and are intrigued. Also with them is director Michael Mann, who scribbles notes while the men share a bottle of wine and engage in an animated conversation that lasts until closing.

The Washington Post: Boom Town (BOL) -- "...I once sold a movie script to Hollywood for what I thought was a great deal of money; insiders, however, assured me that, to Hollywood, it was chicken feed. The movie was never made, which seemed to me to be an enormous financial tragedy for the studio that had bought the script; insiders, however, assured me that my fee had probably been budgeted in the same category as lobby fish-tank maintenance. Hollywood operates on an entirely different monetary system. I remembered all this the other day when I walked out my front door to discover that my Capitol Hill neighborhood had been transformed, overnight, into Amsterdam. A big-budget movie was being made." - Thanks, Maria

The Hollywood Reporter: Ruggers up: Versus plays Crowe's team -- American audiences are about to see Russell Crowe in a much different role. Contact Music (consider the source for veracity) - "Oscar-winning actor RUSSELL CROWE found it hard to say goodbye to his co-stars after filming finished on movie 3:10 TO YUMA - particularly his character's horse. The Gladiator star - who plays Ben Wade in the Western movie - admits he became particularly fond of the animal. He says, "Doing these sort of movies with animals, you get close because it's an intense working relationship - 10 or 12 hours a day for months - so it's hard to say goodbye. "There are some you have a deeper connection with immediately and you can work on that over time. I've found over the years that the more gentle you are with a horse, the deeper that connection gets." - Thanks, Avril

EW on line: Yuma still not ready to ride into sunset -- Audiences continue to love a good old-fashioned Western — just ask Lionsgate. The studio's 3:10 to Yuma opened solidly with $14 million in 2,652 theaters four weekends ago. But what's more interesting is how the R-rated movie starring Christian Bale and Russell Crowe continues to perform: Its box office tally now totals close to $40 million and some Lionsgate insiders believe it will out-gross Focus's Eastern Promises on a per-screen basis this frame. As such, Lionsgate keeps adding theaters to its release. In fact, this weekend Yuma will be in 3,006 venues, 354 more than when it opened. On Movie City News' Gurus 'o Gold Oscar poll, the movie is in 16th place in the Best Picture race, but perhaps that ranking will improve if Yuma continues to gallop along at the box office. - Thanks, Tamara

E! News: Jay-Z's All American Release -- "But while the album will be released in conjunction with the Denzel Washington-Russell Crowe flick, it will be separate from the film's official soundtrack. Instead, Jay-Z says his opus will be a complement, featuring a "musical journey and lyrical interpretation" of the flick, which centers on the true story of New York drug kingpin turned informant Frank Lucas. - Thanks, Allison

AG screening review - Film Ick: "...My hands down favourite moment in the film comes in a dramatisation of the Ali-Frazier bout of 1971. It's relatively early in the investigation and Richie Roberts is tracking Frank Lucas, still not yet clear on who he is, or quite what impact he is having on the city's organised crime and drug trade. The cop has a camera and snaps a couple of shots of the gangster, flashed up on screen as still images as he does so. As we move from the first to the second, not only is Frank's character crystallized but we understand that Richie himself now understands who this guy really is, and something of what he's going to have to do now. It's awesome stuff - a monumental moment in the story related largely by two still images - if dependent, of course, on their surrounding shots and other info we've been fed here and there in the scene, if not elsewhere in the film. This is why I go to the cinema, for bolts of lightning like this." - Thanks, Maria

The NY Times: For Jay-Z, Inspiration Arrives in a Movie - Mr. Scott said he cast the rappers T. I., RZA and Common in supporting roles, hoping to appeal to a younger audience. But Brian Grazer, the film’s producer, said that Mr. Washington also pressed him more than a year ago to consider asking Jay-Z to do the film’s soundtrack. “I just didn’t think there’d be enough for Jay-Z to do,” Mr. Grazer said, explaining that he resisted because he and Mr. Scott felt the movie required an authentic 1970s feel. -- Thanks, Ivani

The Washington Post - Reliable Source: Ridley Scott and the crew of "Body of Lies" gave us one last surprise yesterday before wrapping up three weeks of local filming, as they magically transformed the Lufthansa counter at Dulles into . . . the airport in Amman, Jordan. Lots of Arabic signs, a hundred extras in burqas and other Middle Eastern garb. It was all in keeping with the movie's super-efficient stay here, in which Eastern Market stood in for Amsterdam and Baltimore served as Munich and Manchester. Russell Crowe and Leo DiCaprio then moved out to film a scene at Landow's Jet Center, a corporate hangar that also got an oil-state makeover -- a small fleet of white Mercedes-Benzes and a Rolls, all of which cost some five figures to rent just for the day. Alas, director Scott did not blow anything up this time. Tomorrow, they leave us for Morocco (which, presumably, will play Loudoun County or maybe Norway). - Thanks, Ivani

Hamptons.com: One local writer who is smiling big these days is Nick Pileggi. His new movie "American Gangster," of which he is executive producer has major Hollywood and NYC buzz after a private screening. Word is Russell Crowe, who stars in the flick, makes this one hot ticket! I am sure I don’t have to remind you that Nick is America's expert on crime and the Mafia. He wrote one of the best movies ever made for Martin Scorsese, “Goodfellas”. Nick and his writer director wife, Nora Ephron, once regulars on the Hamptons scene, now spend more time in Hollywood and love their bicoastal lifestyle." - Thanks, Avril

Constant Crowe Updates:  Thanks to Ivani and vsecin, I have two news stories about the slot machine ("pokies") removal from the South Sydney Football Club as well as another new interview bit from Yuma's premiere day press junket.

The Washington Post ReConstant Crowe Updates:  Thanks to Ivani and vsecin, I have two news stories about the slot machine ("pokies") removal from the South Sydney Football Club as well as another new interview bit from Yuma's premiere day press junket. liable Source: As Russell Crowe and Leo DiCaprio started fighting on the Mall yesterday, we prayed: Please . . . let this one be good for Washington! Because for all of the excitement about "Body of Lies," the Ridley Scott spy thriller wrapping up three weeks of filming here, it seems that most of the big Hollywood A-list projects that have recently graced our city have, quite frankly, tanked embarrassingly at the box office... Can "Body of Lies" elude the Washington Curse? Sure, says our set source, noting that very little of the movie is actually set here. Despite three weeks of filming around here, yesterday's shoot (Crowe and DiCaprio in a "heated argument" by the pond near the Vietnam Memorial) was the only time that D.C. played D.C. Otherwise, Eastern Market stood in for Amsterdam, Baltimore played Munich, Annapolis served as Virginia, and an old office building in Gaithersburg served as CIA and NSA headquarters. After two more days of filming here, "Body of Lies" moves off to Morocco. - Thanks, Ivani

FilmThreat.com: The 11th Annual Hollywood Film Festival and Hollywood Awards, presented by STARZ, are pleased to announce honorees who will be recognized for their outstanding achievements at the festival's Hollywood Awards Gala Ceremony, which will take place on October 22, 2007, at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills....Oscar(r)-winner Ben Affleck will be honored with the "Hollywood Breakthrough Director of the Year Award," Academy Award-winning actress Jennifer Connelly will receive the "Hollywood Supporting Actress of the Year Award," and producers Neil Meron and Craig Zadan will receive the "Hollywood Producers of the Year Award." - Thanks, Allison

Michael Morgan Blog: Now that's Gangster - "Who hoo! So the screening of the year is nearly here. In just a couple of days yours truly will be sharing what’s hot or what’s not about American Gangster. Until then have a look at the brand new extended trailer." - Thanks, Maria

The Age au has another picture of Russell at the Michigan game (With Bruno and Keith!) (Thanks, Carole) - Thanks, Allison

UNLV - The Rebel Tell: “American Gangster” (Nov. 02): Did anyone else see those gigantic cardboard posters at the theatres this summer with Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe looking like flapper-era gang members? And did anyone else get excited, point and exclaim, “Oh my God! OSCARS!” Or was I the only one who looked like an idiot in front of the concession stand?

Cinematical: Monday morning poll and fall buzzes in - "But what about the rest of the season? What's coming out, what's getting good buzz and what should you go to see once it arrives in theaters? The Coen Brothers' No Country for Old Men is being touted as one of the boys best films in years, and lots of folks (including yours truly) are real interested in what Paul Thomas Anderson plans to do with his turn-of-the-century oil tale, There Will Be Blood. Ridley Scott's American Gangster is scoring lots of high marks for the performances (Denzel Washington, Russell Crowe)..." - Thanks, Allison

From Avril: This link takes you to a page where you can view a video of Russell and Christian - it's a very funny one!! They talk about concrete cows and other stuf. LOL!! Also, down the right hand side of the page that plays the above videos, there are other videos too, all Yuma connected. This one is entitled Russell Crowe Rules the Box Office (reelzchannel.com) and at the end the interviewer tells us that Russell talked about his directing debut for Bra Boys and it will be on their site next week.

A so-so review for Yuma from the Sunday Times of London - "It’s been a long time since Crowe really shone. Here he just cruises along, playing it safe by accessing his movie-star charm instead of taking a risk and creating one of the great western bad guys. The voice is right – a gravelly purr – but the character doesn’t have the magic mix of repulsion and attraction. Crowe’s Wade is one devil who doesn’t have the best tunes.......Don’t get me wrong: 3:10 to Yuma is a watchable, if undistinguished, drama that walks a fine line between modern realism and old-fashioned cowboy picture. On this evidence, however, I suspect the western revival is still a long way off." - Thanks, Amelie

The article from teletext linked yesterday is, I quote, "a bull shit story." [ed note: It looks like the article has been removed]

Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: Yuma' fashions more than just black, white - Thanks, Allison

Variety: R-rated Western and awards hopeful "3:10 to Yuma," the top gunslinger last weekend, narrowly beat preeming laffer "Mr. Woodcock" for the No. 2 spot. Lionsgate and Relativity Media's "Yuma," declining just 35% in its second frame, grossed an estimated $9.15 million from 2,667 locations; cume in the pic's first 10 days is $28.5 million. Directed by James Mangold, oater stars Russell Crowe, Christian Bale and Ben Foster.

Product Reviews.net: Last weekend's champion film, the western 3:10 Yuma, sipped to Number 2, making $9.2 million. After 10 days, the film starring Russell Crowe and Christian Bale has earned a modest $28.6 million. Which, considering the film cost around $55 million to make, isn?t too good.- Thanks, Steph

The Washington Post - Reliable Source (This bit is not on line): HEY, ISN'T THAT . . .? Leonardo DiCaprio, finally showing his face in D.C. Saturday afternoon more than a week and a half after co-star Russell Crowe arrived to shoot the spy thriller "Body of Lies." Leo made what may have been his first public appearance at Georgetown waterfront hangout Tony and Joe's in T-shirt, shades and scruffy goatee; he looked heavier than usual (for the role, no doubt), sat outside with two male friends and tipped 20 percent. - Thanks, Teresa

"I could sense through what I was watching on TV that my friend was in a bit of pain, so I thought I'd just sort of take his mind off things and gave him a call and started teasing about it, and he said, 'Get up here,' " Crowe said. Crowe spoke to the team before the game, and he ran onto the field, and touched the banner at midfield. "I don't want to make this the last time I come down, that's for sure," Crowe said." - Thanks, Steph

The UK Telegraph: 14 things you didn't know about the Western -- By Craig Brown (British humor!) -- 9. Russell Crowe's new 3.10 to Yuma is, in fact, a remake of 4.50 from Paddington. Crowe's role was taken in the original by the redoubtable Dame Margaret Rutherford.... The Good, The Bad and The Ugly has also been retitled to keep it in line with historical findings. It is now available on DVD as The Good, The Disadvantaged and The Interesting-Looking. - Thanks, Christine

The Washington Post: a funny view of Yuma and birds - Movies don't give a hoot -- "In James Mangold's new blockbuster Western "3:10 to Yuma," the first time we meet Ben Wade, played by tough-guy actor Russell Crowe, he is making a natural history sketch of a bird just minutes before carrying out yet another murderous stagecoach robbery. The scene establishes Wade not only as a complex character, but as a savvy birder who takes the time to document what is surely the first and only sighting in the United States of Africa's augur buzzard....Alas, the entertainment industry knows no shame. Moviemakers' attention to period detail in costumes, props, sets and dialogue grows ever more sophisticated, and the budgets for high-end productions regularly top tens of millions of dollars. Imagine how hard directors worked to equip Ben Wade with the right spurs and pistol. But they apparently think that getting the right bird is, well, for the birds." - Thanks, Marilyn

If dreams could come true.... The SMH: The big dry saps life from boarding schools, too -- The expected closure of St Joseph's Boarding College, 132 years after its establishment in Perthville, outside Bathurst, is being blamed on falling numbers of Catholic girls and shrinking rural communities, compounded by the impact of the long drought. "All the girls were upset when we told them and one of the year 8 girls said if Russell Crowe could save the Rabbitohs, maybe he can save the school," said the congregation's leader, Sister Mary Cromer. - Thanks, Maria

The Washington Post Reliable Source: "An Annapolis family gave Russell Crowe a Hollywood welcome when a film shoot for "Body of Lies" set up on their block -- yes, literally. The cast and crew of the new Ridley Scott thriller (co-starring Leo DiCaprio, but we haven't seen him yet, have you?) arrived in the waterfront neighborhood that plays the Oscar winner's home to find that the folks next door had set up a greeting on their front lawn -- a perfectly scaled rendering of the famous HOLLYWOOD sign in two-foot-high white letters. Apparently the neighbors -- whom a publicist on the set would ID only as the Wuest family -- had the sign left over from a Rat Pack-themed party a while back. They also (very smart!) set up a picnic table with snacks and a generally welcoming vibe, which lured Crowe over to chat and sign autographs for half an hour Wednesday night. Take note, star stalkers." - Thanks, CGee

Uk Reviews for Yuma thanks to Amelie: the Independent -- The Guardian -- The Telegraph

PR Inside: Russell Crowe would have liked to have been runner JESSE OWENS at the 1936 Olympics - so he could humiliate German Nazi leader ADOLF HITLER. The Gladiator star loves the tale of how African-American Owens shamed racist Hitler by beating all his white athletes in Berlin - but he wouldn't have just gone home after winning gold. Crowe says, "It's an extremely significant moment, a drawing of a line in the sand in terms of the racial idiocy that Adolf Hitler was promoting. "The one thing that I would do differently is when Hitler was getting up to leave the stadium, I think I would have pursued him." - Thanks, Liu (This quote first appeared in the Sports Illustrated article of 9/7)

My Movies.com: Excellent behind the scenes bits with narration by Crowe, Bale and Mangold . - Thanks, Judy

True West Magazine: 3:10 to Yuma - on track - "...In the new version, Wade, as played by Russell Crowe, is taken even higher. He’s a fancy dressing, philosophically agile figure who makes sketches of birds and women’s backsides, and he has crucifixes on his gun grips. Wade is a couple of moral twists away from being one of those good natured cowboy Robin Hoods who roamed the West in old serials. He’s nearly dashing. “[I] probably based pretty much every decision about the character from a scene where he discusses the time and the reasons why he once read the Bible from cover to cover,” says Crowe. “That to me is sort of like the central core of who Ben is. And, you know, it wasn’t a very pleasant experience for him. I kind of took the attitude that he doesn’t believe in a benevolent God, that he got stuck somewhere in the Old Testament, you know, and hasn’t come out of there yet.” -- Thanks, Judy

From Ivani: According to Box Office Mojo, Yuma will not lose theaters tomorrow, on the contrary, it will get 15 more.

CHUD: (wishful rumor casting) -- "...Just remember that half of these movies will either fall apart or be shoved aside in favor of other projects over the next few months (notice, for example, that the Scott brothers are each attached to two films). But that shouldn't stop you from emailing IESB and claiming to have the inside scoop on Nottingham starring Russell Crowe, Paul Bettany, a coming-out-of-retirement Sean Connery and Natalie Portman as a mocap-ed Audrey Hepburn. Get to work!" - Thanks, Maria

Film Jerk.com: A list starting circulating around the talent agencies two weeks ago, listing the 300 projects in active development which have become pre-strike priorities for the major studios and a number of top production companies. This list does not mean all of these projects will be completed before the strike date or that they will come together in time. A few titles have already started shooting, some others have set production start dates, and a couple will likely end up on somebody's Best Films Never Made list a few years down the road. (Nottingham on the Universal list)

The NY Post - Liz Smith: HERE'S WHAT's sizzling - the VIP insider sneak of executive producer Nick Pileggi's movie "American Gangster," to be seen at MoMA on Saturday. Brian Grazer and Ridley Scott are inviting and, boy oh boy, is this Russell Crowe starrer ever a hot ticket! Need I remind that writer Pileggi is America's expert on crime and the Mafia? He wrote one of the best movies ever made for Martin Scorsese - "Goodfellas." Nick is happily wed to the best-selling humorist Nora Ephron. She writes and directs as well. Nick and Nora, once denizens of the Hamptons, now segue between Manhattan and Hollywood and are happier for their bicoastal existence. - Thanks, Kris C - Also in Smith's Variety column - Thanks, Allison, susiek

Politico.com: Russell Crowe has been sighted! We have the first pics of Russell Crowe in D.C.! The Aussie is in town filming the Ridley Scott film, Body of Lies. Today he was spotted after a day of filming at the GXS Building in Gaithersburg, Maryland. He stopped traffic after jumping out of his SUV at Canal near MacArthur so he could bike back towards his D.C. hotel. We hear traffic was at a stand still for a good 10 minutes. In the film, Crowe has gray hair [Ed Note: Probably a wig] and lots of make-up, so keep a look out! - Thanks, Teresa

The Arundel Digest: "Mr. Crowe also stars in the remake of "3:10 to Yuma," which opened Friday, but in his latest project he will be taking a detour to St. Andrew's to drop off his kid for school and make a quick phone call to Mr. DiCaprio. But filming those scenes required almost 12 hours of preparation and a caravan of support people. "I was very surprised to see how big of a production it was," said Leslie Redwine, acting principal." - Thanks, Allison

Voice of America Yuma review: interesting comments by Russell on Wade -- "Right from when Ben's character first confronts Ben Wade and there's a steadiness about Dan," explains Crowe, "I don't think it's something Ben Wade comes across very often. People have an extreme reaction to him because of the reputation that precedes him. So I think that begins a kernel of respect and that's what grows. "I don't think that Wade actually has a moral compass, necessarily, or a conscience. He couldn't care less. He will do whatever he needs to do right in that moment to make the balance come his way," he adds, "but I think he sees a little bit of his own fight in Dan, so there is a tinge of empathy. However, at any stage if that was threatened there might be a different response."

CNN: Christian Bale: I'm in it for the work - Thanks, Amy

The Independent ie: Interview with Russell re Yuma

Harry at AICN reviews Yuma: "...3:10 TO YUMA by James Mangold is exactly the sort of Western I have wanted to see get made for a very long time. Just a gritty western world filled with men that’d kill ya faster than they would see ya. A Western filled with cowards and men of principle. Men with a code and men with no code."

MCN: Klady's Weekend BO report: It was high noon at the box office as 3:10 to Yuma got to the station ahead of the posse with an estimated $13.5 million. As the summer rode into the sunset, the sound of the fall came in a blazin' … sort of. The debut of Yuma didn't quite leave the competition choking dust and the other national bow, Shoot 'Em Up was mostly firing blanks with a $5.8 million weekend that ranked fourth overall....There was a high degree of anxiety surrounding the opening of 3:10 to Yuma with nay sayers anticipating that a western yarn simply wouldn't cut it with the current generation of filmgoers and fans expecting a surprise. In the end it chugged to a middle ground that was respectable but hardly a call to boots and saddles.

September 11 - We remember...

Cinema Blend: Russell Crowe's Body of Lies -- "Russell Crowe re-teams with Gladiator director Ridley Scott this fall for the new mob movie American Gangster, but the two love working together so much that they’re already filming on another project. The AP reports that Crowe is currently in the Baltimore area shooting the new Ridley Scott thriller Body of Lies. The film stars Russell Crowe and Leonardo DiCaprio in the story of a former journalist who comes out of Iraq with a shattered leg only to hired by the CIA to help in tracking down an Al Queda leader in Jordan. It’s based on a fictional counterterrorism tale by author David Ignatius. DiCaprio stars as the journalist Roger Ferris while Crowe plays his CIA contact, a division chief named Ed Hoffman. So far, collaboration between Russell Crowe and Ridley Scott has been something of a mixed bag. Gladiator was good (but a little overrated), while their last movie, the wine-swilling mid-life crisis flick A Good Year was completely awful. If American Gangster ends up being good, does that mean Body of Lies has to suck?"

From Laurie: The Charlie Rose interview with James Mangold is now on-line.  A wonderful 20-odd minute discussion of Yuma.

The Washington Post: Shaking Things Up in Baltimore -- Ridley Scott continued his local campaign of terror yesterday as he blew up a building in Baltimore. Or rather, blew out the windows of an abandoned rowhouse in the Collington Square area (in this case playing Manchester, England) for his DiCaprio 'n' Crowe movie, "Body of Lies." This, just a week after the director blew up a car at Eastern Market (playing the role of Amsterdam). We've since heard from some extras who were startled -- despite warnings that "this is an actual bomb" -- when they were sprayed with real broken glass. A couple of extras got minor cuts, and one told us, half-horrified, half-delighted, "It scared the bejesus out of me!" Aw, can't Leo give it a kiss and make it better? - Thanks, Maria

Village Voice au: Vanguard hits the right notes - The Vanguard has hosted a cavalcade of well known Australian and international performers since it opened in 2003....Another moment that sticks out in Mr Cass' memory is when Elvis Costello got up on stage with Russell Crowe, and they went on to perform five songs together during the night. "Russell was a top bloke and even bought in cases of Moet for all of the staff as a Christmas present." - Thanks, Allison

Cindy Adams in the NY Post: Crowe flies into film options -- "September 11, 2007 -- FROM Western to sci-fi, the wanted hombre is Russell Crowe. Out cur rently with "3:10 to Yuma," he's now being courted for installment 11 of the "Star Trek" movies. They want him to zoom through that black hole as the dude in the black hat. To play the bad guy. To go where no Australian has gone before. Streaking through galaxies since 1966, the franchise has been around so long that Crowe was actually a "Star Trek" fan as a kid. Anyway, if he throws a Klingon on the barbie and says G'day to us from the United Federation of Planets, the thing should come out Christmas 2008." - Thanks, Kris C, Ivani

Variety: Tenderness release news - TORONTO -- Icon Prods. is acquiring sales rights to a number of GreeneStreet Films' current productions and library titles....GreeneStreet's upcoming slate includes "Tenderness," starring Russell Crowe; "Wedding Daze," starring Jason Biggs and Isla Fisher; "Gary the Tennis Coach," starring Seann William Scott; "Laws of Motion," starring Matthew Perry and Hilary Swank; and "Unknown," starring Jim Caviezel, which Veneziano exec produced." - Thanks, Allison

The Australian star dined with two athletic-looking male Aussies on a platter of ribs and a heap of side dishes washed down with a Budweiser and was generous to staff and gawkers." - Thanks, Maria

The Globe and Mail (That Geoffrey Rush!) at the Toronto Film Festival - "Over at the bar, Academy Award winner Geoffrey Rush sipped a double vodka, while he embellished the story behind the tiny wound on his forehead. "You should have seen how bad the other Aussie got it. That Russell Crowe, he certainly had it coming." In all seriousness, the Pirates of the Caribbean madman said he absentmindedly walked into a tree."

The Syracuse Daily Orange: "Syracuse University students will get the chance to live like Hollywood celebrities and movie critics this year. Thanks to a new, innovative program called Campus U, they will have the chance to see movie premiers before the rest of the nation.... On Sept. 26, the Palace Theater will show the critically acclaimed "The Kingdom," starring Jamie Foxx and Jennifer Garner, days before its opening release. Other flicks slated for this semester include "Elizabeth: The Golden Age," George Clooney's sports comedy "Leatherheads" and Ridley Scott's "American Gangster," starring Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe." - Thanks, Maria

The Daily Telegraph: HIS latest flick 3:10 to Yuma topped the box office when it opened in the US at the weekend, but Russell Crowe has revealed he still has regrets about his recent film choices. The Hollywood heavyweight admitted yesterday he's now sorry to have missed out on being part of Baz Luhrmann's sweeping outback epic Australia, currently shooting final interior scenes at Moore Park's Fox Studios. ... But the Woolloomooloo local denied internet reports circulating yesterday claiming he was still waiting for payment from Luhrmann for stables he built for the movie. Crowe admitted building the eight-bay stables at his property at Nana Glen, near Coffs Harbour, but said there was never any issue over money. "Baz, Nic, Hugh and many of my other friends are in the cast and crew,'' he said. - Thanks, Tamara

iF Magazine: Interview with Russell ---- on Ben Wade -- “I think one of the important things – because we’ve had no history of Wade being – we don’t know his future, we don’t know if he gets captured and all that sort of stuff, so I was always taking the attitude that he was actually very successful at what he did, and this is probably the fourth or fifth version of his ‘gang’,” explains Crowe. “And when they become too proficient, the gang members around him and the things that he taught them, that’s probably the time to clean the slate and move on and go and get himself another gang. There’s a story in THE PRINCESS BRIDE when they’re talking about the dread pirate robbers changing hands and that would go through my mind in terms of how to explain him.” - Thanks, Steph

Constant Crowe Updates:  Thanks to AnneCB, Ivani and vsecin, I have a lot of Yuma review vids up for the 8th and 9th!  Also, I've rendered the Russell Crowe section from the Entertainers program which aired early Saturday morning and a YouTube vid from the Kostya Tszyu fight in June of 2005 (Will whoever posted this please email me for credit, thank you!).

Good news!! - Variety: 'YUMA' ROPES IN AUDIENCES -- Western rides to the top of box office - Audiences proved willing to saddle up for Western "3:10 to Yuma," which lassoed a solid $14.1 million on a typically soft post-Labor Day frame....Lionsgate's Russell Crowe-Christian Bale starrer appealed primarily to men over 25. Ortenberg predicted the pic could have a long run like the studio's last early-opening kudos contender, "Crash." Lionsgate is already planning an aggressive awards season campaign. -- (Thanks to all who sent the BO news in yesterday and today) - And from E! on line: The movie is Crowe's first number one opener since Gladiator.

IOL Ireland on line -(This looks like gossip) - Russell Crowe has slammed fellow Australian Baz Luhrmann for failing to pay for stables the actor built for him.

The actor will definitely be here in January, but, Bruno wrote, "we are still evaluating if we will bring the band as the trip is really about Rugby League and Russell's South Sydney Rabbitohs." Oh, come on, Bruno, what's rugby without a rousing, raucous musical warm-up? - Thanks, Allison

ABC2 News: BOL -- The movie will continue filming for the rest of the month in Baltimore, Washington and the suburbs in between. DiCaprio will do his work in D-C. After wrapping in this area, the production moves to Morocco.

CBS on the Oscar Race - Best Actor -- "...Crowe "might be nominated. He is back with Ridley Scott, a great director. You've got to remember that in 2000, he won an Oscar for 'Gladiator' (also directed by Scott), and has been nominated twice more," (for "The Insider" and "A Beautiful Mind"). Leatherman feels Crowe could be nominated for either movie."

Chron.com: Hollywood Embraces black artists: Only one of the big-budget movies, American Gangster — a biographical crime film co-starring Washington and Russell Crowe — is set in a largely black milieu. It's directed by Ridley Scott (Gladiator, Black Hawk Down) and is being marketed to mainstream audiences. Because of the estimated $100 million budget and the level of the director and stars, "it's going to be treated differently," Boyd (notes Todd Boyd, a University of Southern California professor and an expert on the representation of race in popular culture) says. "It's that simple."

Yahoo News: Russell Crowe filming in Maryland

I posted my review/thoughts on Yuma at the back-up Crowe news blog. This way you may add your review or comment as you wish

Yuma from Capone at AICN: "...On a purely visceral level, 3:10 TO YUMA is equally awesome. The gun battles are quick, loud, bloody and executed with no frills. This is what I've always liked about James Mangold as a director; his style (more like anti-style) is to let the story tell itself and not try and overwhelm an audience with too many wild camera tricks and artsy flare. He makes it seem like he's just filming what's happening rather than making his movies feel stagy or rehearsed. Cap off the quality filmmaking with a memorable score by Marco Beltrami, and you've got yourself a great way to kiss a summer largely without substance goodbye. Ignore the talk about "The Return of the Western," and consider 3:10 TO YUMA a return to films that make you think about violence in a way most escapist action films don't. This is a film of substance that still manages to be about as entertaining as anything I've seen this year. It's also a great chance to see these two acting giants play against each other in unexpected ways and create an uneasy partnership that is greater than the sum of its parts."

My thoughts on 3:10 to Yuma - Spoilers

Cinematical: Shoot 'Em Up: Insert Caption -" If there's still any doubt as to the lasting effect Brokeback Mountain has had on our collective image of the Western, look no further than the 69 captions we received for last week's 3:10 to Yuma contest. (Of course we also owe a great debt of gratitude to Jon Stewart for putting it all in historical context with that hilarious Oscars montage). Some moviegoers may be disappointed to hear that Russell Crowe and Christian Bale do not get... it... on... in Yuma, but I can tell you that they do seem to develop Jonah Hill-Michael Cera-style man-crushes on each other if that counts for anything. Congrats to our victors below, you win... his-and-hers Yuma t-shirts." - Thanks, Allison

The Baltimore Sun: Yes, that was Russell Crowe in Annapolis -- "Yesterday, while Russell Crowe was winning his best set of reviews in years for his tour-de-force villainy in 3:10 to Yuma, he was also playing a soccer dad in Annapolis. It was his first day of shooting on the international espionage thriller Body of Lies, and Crowe was doing two scenes at St. Andrew's United Methodist Day School: easing into the carpool area and watching one of his two fictional kids play soccer." - Thanks, Ivani, Steph

Slash Film: Oscar winner Russell Crowe and Batman Begins star Christian Bale have lassoed the Friday box office crown, and 3:10 TO YUMA (Lionsgate) will ride away with a surprisingly easy 3-day weekend win. The James Mangold-directed remake of the classic Western of the same name grabbed just over $5M on Friday, and appears to be headed for a weekend of $15.15M. If the number holds, 3:10 TO YUMA will have delivered the 2nd-best 3-day opening for a Western in the past 20 years. - Thanks, Ivani

Newsday: The 101-year-old estate of Old Westbury Gardens is providing a plush setting for two major feature films set for fall premieres, one theatrically and the other on cable TV...
In other filming there, director Ridley Scott came to the Gardens for a day last October with Denzel Washington and Armand Assante to film interior and exterior shots for "American Gangster." Washington plays Frank Lucas, a former drug kingpin who eventually became an informant against a heroin network of corrupt cops and foreign nationals. Russell Crowe also stars in the 1970s-set film, playing the lawman who worked with Lucas to expose the ring. "American Gangster" is set for release on November 19. Built in 1906, Old Westbury Gardens is a Charles II-style mansion set on 160 acres of gardens, woodlands, ponds and lakes. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. -Thanks, Allison

Constant Crowe Updates:  Thanks to a head's-up from Gena ( Crowe's Magik), I have the Starz Hollywood Reporter special preview for Yuma and a featured profile for Rusty!  Thanks to a head's-up from my mate, Ree, the Daily Show on 09-05-2007 was sponsored by 3:10 to Yuma.  The trailer they used is totally cool, lots of cocking guns.  Thanks to a head's-up from MM, I have the latest trailer for Yuma, as aired on CMT today!  Thanks to Cindy, I have the latest Yahoo clip and a clip from AOL's Moviefone site!

Rotten Tomatoes: Ah, the Western... Every time the genre is pronounced dead, it seems as though a movie like 3:10 to Yuma comes along to revive it. Christian Bale stars as a financially-strapped rancher who joins a group to escort a train robber (Russell Crowe) to federal court; mind games and quick-draw action ensue. Critics say the film is one of the best Westerns in years, featuring outstanding performances from Crowe, Bale, and Ben Foster, and simultaneously utilizing old-fashioned storytelling while deepening the psychological complexity. And while it might fall a little short of the original (93 percent), at 81 percent, Yuma is Certified Fresh all the same. (Check out our interview with Yuma director James Mangold and star Peter Fonda here.) - Thanks, Allison

Fantasy Moguls: FINAL WEEKEND TRACKING: '3:10 to Yuma' is Vulnerable, But Seems Headed for $13M-$16M; 'Shoot 'Em Up' and Fast-Fading 'Halloween' to Battle for Second by Steve Mason -- At a glance, it looks like 3:10 to Yuma (Lionsgate) should edge Shoot 'Em Up  (New Line) for the weekend box office win, and the Western will probably carry the day. It's less of a sure thing, however, than you might think.

Film Journal: "...The bottom line is that while it’s a workmanlike piece of filmmaking, 3:10 to Yuma pales in comparison to a solidly traditional western like Kevin Costner’s Open Range. That noted, about the best you can say about Mangold’s work is that it won’t kill off the genre. Nor will it help to revive it."

USA Today: Christian Bale pours body, soul into roles - Thanks, Mike

Slate: Russell Crowe squares off against Lionsgate -- "Those said to be displeased with Lionsgate's handling of the film are the Russell Crowe camp, as well as director James Mangold (Walk the Line) and his producer-spouse, Cathy Konrad. Let it be noted that none of these individuals will ever win a congeniality award. Certainly Crowe has agendas involving his own career that may not sync up with Lionsgate's interests. He's coming off the exceedingly dreadful A Good Year and another disappointing performer, Cinderella Man, before that. So he's looking for a hit. He and his advisers believe that hit will be American Gangster, an upcoming Universal film that pairs him with Denzel Washington. (We're told Universal will run an Oscar campaign for Crowe in the best supporting actor category.) Crowe did not want to muddy the waters by opening 3:10 to Yuma too close to American Gangster's release on Nov. 2. His camp thought the film should be moved to next year—and promised that the star would be more cooperative in promoting it if Lionsgate agreed. But Lionsgate did not." - Thanks, Steph

The Portland Mercury: American Gangster - A tale of two trailers - "Right now there are two trailers out for American Gangster, a promising-enough film directed by Ridley Scott, written by Steven Zaillian, and starring Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe. I’ve got high hopes for it—Scott can be awesome, and I’ve yet to be disappointed by either Washington or Crowe." - Thanks, Kris C

It's really about the weeping soul [sic - sore] that is American international politics. It's very short shoot for me, probably only about five weeks, perfect. Then back for the premiere (AG) in New York at the Apollo Theater on October 19. That will be fantastic. I'm really looking forward to that."

The SMH: WE can probably thank the Beatles for the musical wonders of Christian Lindberg, although his journey to uber-trombonist has been somewhat circuitous... "We've been working very closely together on this," Lindberg says. From Isis at CC: "While I was waiting for my Yuma sneak peek I killed time at Barnes & Noble. It's the perfect setup. The theatre is at a mall and not 10 feet from the theatre's mall entrance is the entrance to B&N. Anyway, I was looking for the October American Cinematagrapher and when I couldn't find it I started looking at other movie mags with Russell connections. I finally found one with Reviving the Western: 3:10 to Yuma and I grabbed it immediately looking at the index. Crowe, who was unable to watch his beloved South Sydney Rabbitohs play in Sydney last night, is on set with DiCaprio in the United States. Charlotte.com: VIDEO REVIEW: Original '3:10 to Yuma' had great villain -- "Alfred Hitchcock had what he called an "unwritten law" about bad guys in the movies: "The better the villain, the better the picture." In Delmar Daves' 1957 Western "3:10 to Yuma," Glenn Ford may not quite join Claude Rains in "Notorious" or James Mason in "North by Northwest" in the pantheon of screen villainy, but he comes close. Playing the outlaw gang leader Ben Wade, Ford delivers an exceptional performance as a man who's shrewd, well-mannered, violent and complex." - Thanks, Allison

Constant Crowe Updates:  I have an interview with JT from NRL Deluxe and, thanks to Ivani, a vid of Peter Travers' review of the upcoming Fall films which includes American Gangster.

The LA Times: For Christian Bale, it's the full-immersion method -- "...Bale's family spent most of the shoot on-set with him, and Mangold's son, Crowe's two children and Bale's daughter even formed a small play group. Parenthood has mellowed Bale and that's undoubtedly a good thing since chances are he'll be spending much of the next few years playing a man who moonlights as a bat." - Thanks, Allison

The Scotsman: Fall preview --AMERICAN GANGSTER -- What is it? The rise and fall of Frank Lucas, the real-life Harlem heroin kingpin who, for a short spell in the 1970s, was "above the Mafia". It took the film's producers seven years to decide ersion, directed by Ridley Scott and (re)written last year by Steven Zaillian (Schindler's List), compares and contrasts the oddly ethical business practice of Lucas (Denzel Washington) with the womanising ways of the cop on his tail, Richie Richards (Russell Crowe). Lucas was and is a hero to many in Harlem and Zaillian obviously sees their point. "What happens when a black businessman takes over an industry? It becomes something that's not going to be allowed to continue." Who cares? Gladiator groupies, willing and able to ignore Scott and Crowe's disappointing collaboration on A Good Year. Audiences who enjoy Washington in flawed mode and/or relish the idea of a black Godfather. • Release date: 16 November.
