From tsnozworld - There was a great Russell feature in Weekend Australian Magazine last weekend that I have not seen mentioned on your site

Cinematical: Our Favorite Summers: 1993 - 6/11 - No one tried to go up against Jurassic Park but Tina Turner. What's Love Got To Do With It came out this weekend and couldn't even crack the top ten. Some interesting indie offerings though: Equinox and Orlando catered to the arthouse crowd and this was the weekend that America first met a man named Russell Crowe in the controversial Romper Stomper. Fast forward 16 years, and he's more of a draw than anyone on the 1993 top ten ... which is exactly how it should be! - Thansk, Allison

Off Topic from YouTube - The Antwerp Railway Station -- A wonderful pick me up for these trying times - "...More than 200 dancers were performing their version of "Do Re Mi", in the Central Station of Antwerp. with just 2 rehearsals they created this amazing stunt! Those 4 fantastic minutes started the 23 of march 2009, 08:00 AM. It is a promotion stunt for a Belgian television program, where they are looking for someone to play the leading role, in the musical of "The Sound of Music". - Thanks, Mary Beth

The West.com.au: Polson backed by Crowe call -- (Tenderness) “When I read it, I just saw Russell in this part,” he said. “I thought it interesting to have someone a bit younger but who had a retired feel about him. People retire in their 60s but to see someone in their 40s who has already started to give up, I think that says a lot about his character. “From the moment I read it, I pictured him . . . with a moustache, believe it or not. - Thanks, Steph, Allison

Tenderness Review - The Sydney Morning Herald -- "...Cormier himself called Tenderness a tough book written in "a minor key" and perhaps Polson was inspired by the description. But if so, he doesn't come close. There's a yawning gap between tragedy and cheerlessness and even the persuasive tenderness of Crowe's Cristofuoro can't bridge it." - Thanks, Allison

Yaoo News UK: Russell Crowe and Helen Mirren topped the UK box office with political thriller "State of Play" after the film's opening weekend but takings were modest, according to Screen International on Tuesday. - Thanks, Kris C

The Coffs Coast Advocate: Rabbits definitely not on the menu - "...The actor was tutored by stuntmen as well as experts in these historic combat skills. As a result, a spokesman for the actor said Russell Crowe had become very adept with a bow and arrow in hand. But asked if the actor had shot any rabbits with his bow, there was a horrified pause, before he asked if we were kidding. Presumably jokes about bunnies are not welcome anywhere near this Rabbitohs' hutch." - Thanks, Avril

The Guardian (April 24) Russell Crowe (by David Thomson, acclaimed author on film) -- Russell Crowe is a movie star - at $15m to $20m a pop, thank you - but he seems to be just one of the scruffy lads. It is a hell of a trick - Thanks, AnneCB

Cinematical: Monday Night Poll: Best Films of the Year So Far

From Jan: (Robin Hood related) - I couldn't resist tracing that aerial photo using Multi-map and I found the exact location relatively easy to match. The area (Puttenham Common and the Hampton Estate) is rich in wildlife and history and here is a link to details about it ... I found the mention of an Adder population worth noting. Adders are Britain's only poisonous snake and they are particularly active during April and May as this is when they come out of hibernation and find a mate. They are shy snakes and not aggressive....but at this time of year they do tend to bask in the sun, usually in beds of dry leaves or bracken. In this situation they are very well hidden and you could tread on them before you knew it and probably get a bite. Rarely fatal...except in people weakened by illness or extremes of age or who suffer anallergic reaction...however they deliver a painful bite. So I daresay the crew will need to be mindful. I went for a walk in my local woods yesterday....a sunny afternoon....and spotted a couple of these serpents (about half a meter long) but I daresay I walked past several more. It would be rather ironic if Russell came from Australia to the UK, of all places, and had a Too Close Encounter with a poisonous snake!

The UK Mail: Andrew, Prince of thieves ... Prince Andrew could be the guest of honour at the premiere of Robin Hood after he spent six hours last week watching Russell Crowe film scenes in Windsor Great Park. Andrew was being driven through the park when he spotted the actor and stopped. Crowe took a moment from filming to tell me: 'Yes, Prince Andrew came to visit the set. We were shooting in his back garden, so to speak. He ended up staying for around six hours watching a fireside scene where Robin and his men are attacked by mercenaries in the night. 'I had a number of conversations with him. He was great, very knowledgeable about the Robin Hood period and really interested in our take on the story. 'He since sent me a personal note underlining how much he enjoyed himself on set. I will be sending him a note in return. The cast and crew were honoured. Maybe next time he might bring his mum and dad.' - Thanks, Oz Fan

The LA Times: Moviegoers 'Obsessed' with Beyonce [and Idris Elba]-- "...It has been a tough spring for adult movies. Universal's "State of Play," the Russell Crowe-Ben Affleck political thriller, also opened soft at No. 7 and took in just $6.9 million in its second weekend, a 51% drop from its opening."

From Allison: Craig Ferguson joked about Russell in his 4/17 monologue starting at the 3:10 mark and on/off until he mentions Zac Efron.

From Avril: In the UK, Helen Mirren was a guest on the Friday Night with Jonathan Ross show this evening. They talked about State of Play and Helen was very complimentary about Russell. She called him a "top bloke" and confessed that she had a liking for "bad boys". Jonathan Ross said that Russell is "exceptional" in this movie and that it "blew him away". He called it an "intelligent, sophisticated and smart film". All in all a very good plug for State of Play that should hopefully attract a lot of folks to see it this weekend!

From BarbieCat: I was reading comments at First Showing for the photo of Robin Hood, and found this -- "I meet Russell Crowe tonight in my Pub 'The Good Intent' They are filming in Puttenham, my village!!! Exciting!! - Aimee on Apr 23, 2009"

BBC News: Beach assurance over Potter film (and Robin Hood) - The makers of Robin Hood, which is reported to be co-starring Cate Blanchett, are looking for around 600 extras with an open casting session at Pembroke Dock on 9 May. A spokesperson for the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority said it had been in close contact with the film makers. "Following an approach by a film company we are working with Pembrokeshire council, the National Trust and the Angle Estate to accommodate the shooting of scenes for a Robin Hood film at Freshwater West," it said "We recognise that the filming will inevitably cause some disruption in the area as well as great public interest. "The beach itself and the coast path will however remain open to the public throughout this period and we are working with the film company and all the other organisations involved to ensure that the public's right of access to the path and the beach are respected during this time." - Thanks, Steph

NY Magazine: Universal Wants to Assure Everyone That Russell Crowe Dropped the Weight Before Shooting Robin Hood [on this weight thing - give it a rest, press people - it was deliberately put on to play Cal. I imagine that is how Russell saw him in his mind. And look at him now!]

The New Yorker: David Denby -- SOP Review - "Russell Crowe’s body is shapeless now, his complexion pasty, his hair long and lank; he looks like a dumpling in a wig. But there’s enormous life in his eyes and his voice. Crowe has an animal quickness and sensitivity, a threatening way of penetrating what someone is up to, a feeling for weakness in friends as well as opponents. He seems every inch a great journalist; it’s not his fault that the filmmakers let the big story slip through their fingers."

DVD Times: Sony Pictures Home Entertainment have announced the US Blu-ray Disc release of No Way Back and Striking Distance on 16th June 2009. Cinematically Correct: “State Of Play” Should Remind Everyone That Russell Crowe Is Still A Movie Star - "...While Rachel McAdams has a few scenes of merit, she is also more of a supporting character as “State Of Play” belongs solely to Russell Crowe. It’s hard to believe that Brad Pitt pulled out of this very adult, grown up role, which is something that Pitt has not shown he can do. Instead, Crowe once more shows why he is one of the best actors working today. He grins and charms his way through almost every scene in the movie. Even when McCaffrey is not being a very nice guy, it’s impossible to dislike him because of Crowe. Crowe hasn’t had a chance to be a movie star in a quite some time and “State Of Play” is a reminder that he can still carry a movie on his shoulders…albeit hefty ones in this flick." - Thanks, Steph

The NY Times: The Ru[s]sell Crowe Hotel Puzzle (not snarky) - Thanks, Steph

EW Pop Watch: Russell Crowe in 'Robin Hood': 'Gladiator' with a bow - Thanks, Allison

NPR: Is Russell Crowe So Ancient He Can't Make Movies Anymore? -- "...Surely, we will now go over the details of his appearance and how it has changed, and the "Is Russell Crowe all washed up?" articles will follow. These are clearly not the days of Gladiator and Master and Commander. What has happened to Russell Crowe? Is there hope? Should those who have invested money to see him in next year's Robin Hood be concerned? After all, he will be even older then. I anxiously await these discussions, and if they don't occur, it will make for a curious question of why not." - Thanks, Steph

Box Office Mojo: State of Play landed in second place, reporting an estimated $14.1 million on around 3,200 screens at 2,803 locations. That was better than Body of Lies from last fall and initial attendance was on par with Runaway Jury among comparable titles. In other words, State of Play's opening wasn't special but was within the average range among high-profile political thrillers. The marketing depicted a polished-looking thriller and rattled off a big-name cast amidst general murder and conspiracy intrigue, though it would have needed to show a central character to get behind or a distinct storyline that rises above television fare to go further. Distributor Universal Pictures' research indicated that 55 percent of the audience was female and 75 percent was 35 years and older, and poll respondents' main reasons for seeing the picture were Russell Crowe (66 percent) and the story (52 percent). - Thanks, Cindy

WENN at the IMDb: Russell Crowe is amazed by the politeness of Cate Blanchett's three kids after watching them behave at a recent function. Dad of two Crowe admits he couldn't imagine taking his own children to a two-hour event. He says, "She (Blanchett) was at a public function (and) she had all three of her children there, it went for two hours. There were 1,000 people at this luncheon... and her children were well behaved through the whole thing; they never caused any problems. "I was standing there going, 'B**ch!'" - Thanks, Kris C

Box Office Guru: SOP in second place wih a good 2 day total -- Thanks, Mike - and from Screen Rant: "In second place was State of Play starring Russell Crowe and Ben Affleck. CBC: Aussie rules -- Test your knowledge of Russell Crowe - Thanks, Lynda

LA Times: A movie promoter keeps it in the family -- If he had one campaign to do over: Fogelson said that while he fully supported the early-summer release of director Ron Howard's 2005 drama "Cinderella Man," starring Russell Crowe as a washed-up boxer making a comeback, he now concedes that it probably would have been better suited for a fall or winter date (as some had advocated) given its more somber subject matter. And, as for the film's moniker, Fogelson admits, "We didn't really think about changing the title, but maybe we should have." - Thanks, Allison

Box Office Guru - Weekend Box Office: "...Crowe may have been a box office draw at one time, but today his name means little. Moviegoers want to know what else the film has to offer and won't buy a ticket just for him. Overall, the cast is somewhat valuable at the turnstiles, but there are no names here that carry a lot of box office weight. Look for a moderate bow followed by decent legs. AP Review SOP: "...Believably disheveled, Crowe loses himself in yet another role — as always, he's a character actor in a leading man's body — and he has some fiery exchanges with the always sharp Helen Mirren as the paper's editor. Crowe also has a comfortable chemistry with Rachel McAdams as the young blogger he reluctantly accepts as his partner, and a couple of great scenes with Jason Bateman as a sleazy PR exec who connects several key players. (Functioning as a bad guy is a welcome change from him.)" - Thanks, Kris C

The Star-Ledger NJ: "At a recent screening of "State of Play," the upcoming Russell Crowe thriller, I looked around me as a room full of journalists sat, transfixed, during the closing credits. No it wasn't because of outtakes, or a sudden don't-blink twist. It was the footage that those credits played out against, a sight that's in real danger of disappearing these days: The presses of a big-city newspaper, roaring to life." (ed note: Same ending was in the BBC series. It was memorable)

Reminder: Regis and Kelly tomorrow AM

Newark NJ Examiner: Q&A with Viola Davis (so great in Doubt) on Russell -- Can you talk about your role in "State of Play"? -- I play a pathologist, named Dr. Joy Jackson. I did a day of work. It was fabulous. I worked with Russell Crowe. I was treated great — but it was just a day! Was Russell Crowe intimidating? -- Yeah, he is! I just saw him in this scene — and he [plays] a very unorthodox journalist, not a play-by-the-book journalist, which I like. - Thanks, Allison

Screen Daily on SOP - "Crowe is believable here as veteran Washington reporter Cal McCaffrey. Pudgy and oddly-coiffed, he has a rocky start, entering the picture driving a bashed-up Peugot (he's broke!) while singing along to an Irish jig (he's Irish!) and tossing fast-food wrappers into the back seat (he's unhealthy!). Thankfully, the character broadens out from here and Cal becomes quietly commanding, a complicated character."

From Darrin: Thanks to vsecin, Cassy and Ivani, I have new vids from ET's website and television program, a vid from Fox News' website and a very cool 10 minute featurette that appeared on MovieWeb's site

Variety: Review of SOP -- "In the end, though, it's Crowe who must carry the most freight, which he does with another characterization to relish. Still bulky, although not as much so as in "Body of Lies," long-tressed and somewhat grizzled, he finds the gist of the affable eccentricity, natural obsessiveness and mainstream contrarianism that marks many professional journalists. Crowe may always have been a brilliant character actor hiding inside a leading man's body, but with age, the former is coming to the fore, which promises an interesting evolution. Although the role of Cal was played by John Simm in 1993, Crowe's part actually merges two roles from the original, embracing as well another journo played by James McAvoy. - Thanks, Steph, Allison

The Hollywood Reporter: "State of Play" makes for a reasonably good though highly implausible edge-of-your-seater as long as disbelief is suspended regarding everyone's professional duties. Reporters, cops, politicians -- no one behaves as they should. - Thanks, Allison

Reading Eagle: The state of actress Helen Mirren: a full plate -- "Everyone was fresh and up for it and ready for it when I was there," she said. "I'd never worked with Russell before and I was very excited to do that, and to witness that kind of work in person because, as experienced as you are as an actor, you watch other people on the screen and try to work out, 'Why are they so good? What makes them that good?' "As an actor you try to dissect it," she said, "but you never can. And it's always more interesting to see it present in front of you. So it was great to watch that process." - Thanks, Allison

LA Times: Comparing TV, film versions of 'State of Play' - Thanks, Allison

MSNBC Best Bets: Can “State of Play” stand up to the fantastic BBC series on which it’s based? Hard to say, but Russell Crowe, Ben Affleck, Rachel McAdams and Helen Mirren step into this story about journalists investigating the murder of a woman who was romantically involved with a congressman. And, hey, if you like it, you can always rent the miniseries. (Opens April 17) - Thanks, Allison

The Philadelphia Inquirer: On Movies: Pitt bowed out, replaced by Mr. Right, Crowe - Thanks, Rene, Allison

SOP - From Nora, who saw a screening (Small spoilers): -- we first see him singing along with a Great Big Sea song in his (messy) car -- he has great rapport with Robin Wright Penn, such that their characters' complicated friendship and occasional romance since college is established even without the dialogue about them -- he has such terrific interactions with Helen Mirren as the tough as nails editor who gets great lines that I wished there were more scenes with them together -- he has a nicely increasing mentorship with Rachel McAdam's character, that thankfully doesn't get Hollywood inappropriately romantic --Ben Affleck surprisingly really steps up to Russell's level.  You can feel that Russell inspired him to up his game. -- his girth not only works well for a slovenly journalist, but the film doesn't pretend that he's a super hero, even during a chase scene. Just that he's thinking all the time. Which is the best thing about Russell in the role – you can really see him always thinking. So while this is not at the level of Russell in "Insider" or ABM or CM, it's above BOL.  I loved the original mini-series, and missed some characters and situations, but the transfer to Hollywood political conspiracy thriller works well.

AZCentral: Russell Crowe prefers simple curry -- The ‘Gladiator’ star has stunned staff and guests at the Pennyhill Park Hotel, Surrey – his base while he is in the UK filming ‘Robin Hood’ – by shunning the award-winning catering on offer in favor of the nearby Mogul restaurant where he can get his favorite Indian food.

From Jean: There is a great interview that Ethan Hawke did on Kris Kristofferson in the latest Rolling Stone. Unfortunately, the interview is not available on their online site, but there is a link to Ethan's favorite Kristofferson songs here He quotes Russell in the article and I have transcribed it: "I ask Russell Crowe about Kristofferson the actor. "The magic in Kris' performances for me," he says, "is his inability to hide the truth from himself. From time to time, he may fool other people, but as painful and inconvenient as it may be, he can never not see himself and the world around him just as it is, and he is compelled to let that truth be known. "My favorite film performance of Kristofferson's remains A Star is Born, " Crowe adds. "A songwriter who writes about washed-up has-beens plays one in a movie that was the zenith of his career. There is delicious irony in that." The entire article is worth reading in the April 16th edition of Rolling Stone Magazine. Great photos too!

UK Times On Line: Russell Crowe in US version of State of Play -- "...We are talking about his appearance in the movie. He plays a journalist: long-haired, dishevelled, bit of a porker, though now he's lean and fit. He’s about to be 45, but looks younger. Exactly 20 minutes in, I’m talking to Macdonald when I become aware that Crowe, as if having noticed me for the first time, is staring at me with weird intensity, his piercing, grey-blue eyes moving up and down the full length of my body. Given his record — phones thrown at hotel receptionists, violent anti-press outbursts — this makes me uneasy..." - Thanks, Steph

The Huffington Post: Q & A: Versatile Actor Craig Bierko Bets On A Revived Guys And Dolls -- CB: That was a beautiful production. Yeah, before that, I didn't dance. Before Cinderella Man, I didn't box. But I boxed. It's possible. You go and you work hard at things. Q: So you had to train for that? CB: Six months. Q: So you really had to be able to be in that ring then? CB: Yeah. Q: So do you have to be really almost boxing each other? CB: Well, there were some loose hits, they were genuine mistakes. [Russell Crowe] is a fantastic actor, very responsible. It's dancing. Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers could've knocked each other out. We weren't doing anything different than Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers were doing, just faster and with our arms. But it was dancing, and it was highly choreographed. - Thanks, Steph

*The NY Times: Fleet Street Scoop on Capitol Hill - Praising Mr. Crowe’s performance, he [Macdonald] said: “The great thing about Russell is that he’s so unvain. I explained to him that this guy is a bit of a schlub, a bit of a loser, he lives in the kind of apartment where you would never have people over, and Russell got that right away.” “The interesting thing,” he added, “is that Russell had such contempt for the press to begin with. He hates reporters. It took him a while to acknowledge that there could be such a thing as journalists who were idealistic and incorruptible.” - Thanks, Cindy, Allison, Ivani, Steph [ed note: Since SOP, the mini series, is one of my all time favorite DVDs, I am also wondering how Jason Bateman will do as Marc Warren's replacement playing Dominic Foy]

From Christine: On Today programme, BBC Radio 4, 4.4.09, approx 8.20am - Short piece on current Hollywood interest in remaking British TV series, including SOP. Brief comment from RC (sounds like extract from longer interview) in which he's asked if he's seen the TV version of SOP. Times On Line: Who's up, who's down? -- Up. Russell Crowe - "CW has long loved Crowe - a man so muskily, gruntingly, unapologetically alpha-male that he makes Arnold Schwarzenegger look like Peggy Ollerenshaw from Hi-di-Hi. CW views his films obsessively, by way of a guide to a simpler way of life. Indeed, it has got to the point where CW thinks that Master and Commander is a documentary - particularly the bit where Crowe roars: "Never mind the manoeuvres - just GO STRAIGHT AT THEM!" It's a phrase that CW uses at least three times a day. It is a motto by which one can live an entire life. This week, Crowe caused "outrage" at the Empire Awards, which he attended for barely 20 minutes and graced with a "bizarre" acceptance speech assembled from poetry and pop lyrics. Crowe has form: at the 2002 Baftas, he confronted the show's producer when the poem Crowe read was dropped from broadcast. A "source" at the Empire Awards said: "It's a bit of a cheek. Everyone thought he was rather rude." CW says: world, what is your PROBLEM? A celebrity half-man, half-feral-bear parks his limo up on the pavement, keeps the engine revving, runs in, makes a mad speech that quotes the Bee Gees, and then buggers off again - leaving behind only faint traces of musky man-sweat. He came straight at us. And it was wonderful. - Thanks, Maria

Still, I don't want to neglect the blog so thought I'd do a quickie on a movie I saw last night. Based on an original BBC series with John Simm and Bill Nighy which I'm amazed to say I've never seen (normally I seek out anything with John Simm in), STATE OF PLAY the film is directed by Kevin McDonald (Touching the Void) and stars Russell Crowe, Ben Affleck and Rachel McAdams." - Thanks, Cindy

From Alan Doyle's latest journal entry: "Had some serious pangs of reservation and loneliness as I bid a quick ‘Cheers’ to the GBS Cast and Crew last evening.  I had to dash to the airport right off stage to catch a red-eye to Toronto to connect with this flight to make it to London in time for the film.  All hands sad to acknowledge that we won’t be together for a few months and last night could be our last tune together till August.  Four months is far less than most bands breaks, but this feels like a lifetime for GBS.  I am not certain, but strongly suspect that this will be the longest gap between performances since the band’s debut in 1993.  That said, our Agent, Jack Ross, informed me that our August date in Toronto is off to a roaring start, selling several thousand tickets in the first few hours since going on sale.  Many thanks for those of you who have planned to attend that weekend.  There should be more August and Fall dates announced in the coming weeks.  Back to my moonlighting as a 13th Century Troubadour, with a sword in one hand and a Lute in the other.  Equally ready to flay you open with steel or song." - Thanks, Lynda
