DVD Times UK: HOTA Review (not a new release) - "...Quite a few Australian films have turned up as no-frills releases (full-frame transfer, 2.0 soundtrack, minimal or no extras) in the UK – presumably as the rights are not expensive and as the dialogue is in English no subtitling is required. However, Hammers Over the Anvil picked up some latterday fame in the UK when extracts from the opening sequence – showing Russell Crowe nude on horseback – turned up one Christmas on a BBC show called Before They Were Famous." - Thanks, Allison

From Austin Monthly, March 2009, an article about the music scene and the Pedernales Recording Studio: Among those it attracted was Russell Crowe, who rented the space in 2000 to record with his band, 30 Odd Foot of Grunts. At the time, Fletcher (Freddy Fletcher, owner of the studio) didn’t know who Crowe was. “Does he have a record company?” Fletcher asked. His wife answered, “No, he’s paying for it himself.” He told her to get a deposit. Not long after, Fletcher took his daughter to Europe. “We’re in Paris, and I see Russell Crowe’s poster plastered everywhere for this Gladiator movie. And I called back and I said, “I think he’s good for the money.” Crowe came with a huge crew to film his sessions, and Fletcher had to hire extra people to help. One of the temps had been trying for days to get someone out to repair a broken vending machine, to no avail. Finally, someone walked in wearing what looked like a service shirt, patch and all. She launched off on the guy: “Where have you been? I’ve been calling you for days!” According to Fletcher, the man started laughing, and she added, “Russell Crowe’s coming in here!” He answered, “Hello. I’m Russell Crowe.” In Austin’s renowned recording studios, you never know who you’ll run into. - Thanks, Jeannine

Javno.com: Cult Mafia Themed Films You Must Watch - ... A fantastic film which was shot after a true story and is of a recent date is surely “American Gangster”. Russell Crowe took over the role of a police officer in Ridley Scott`s film, who gradually discovers where the heroin comes from. - Thanks, Allison
The Australian: Crowe finds journalistic truth in Hollywood -- ... Crowe's characterisation of a journalist is excellent, Brenner agrees -- particularly his portrayal of a journo's obsession when on to a good story. Typical was the actor's own ad-lib aimed at Rachel McAdams's blogger character: "I've been here 15 years, I've got a 16-year-old computer. She's been here 15 minutes and she's got enough gear to launch a ... satellite." - Thanks, Cindy
The Uk Times: CROWE NEEDS A NEST - Russell Crowe is looking to rent in west Wales this summer while filming Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood. His people approached the owners of two houses — a 12-bedroom Georgian home near Cardigan, on the market for £1.5m, and an eight-bedroom farm in 230 acres in Pembrokeshire, priced at £2.3m — but both declined, as they want to sell. The actor, 45, could struggle to get a bargain. “The locals know they can charge much more than the going rate for lets to movie stars,” says Carol Peett, director of County Homesearch’s area office. - Thanks, Allison

In the NY Times review of Michael Connelly's latest novel, The Scarecrow -- “The Scarecrow,” a return to form for Mr. Connelly and his sharpest book since “The Lincoln Lawyer,” pivots energetically among its subplots, often returning affectionately to the newspaper world. Jack, the shaggy veteran, has been given a pretty young female protégé (much as Russell Crowe has in the current film “State of Play”) who represents everything that’s wrong with newfangled journalistic practices.

The Vancouver Sun Movie Guide: (Taking of...) How did a relatively unknown Australian actor score the co-lead in the relaunch of one of the biggest film franchises going? Probably in the best way possible: James Cameron recommended him. Worthington, who is starring in Cameron's upcoming 3-D film, Avatar, came highly recommended to McG by the Terminator creator. A second recommendation from Russell Crowe sealed the deal. - Thanks, Maria

Christian Bale in GQ Magazine via christian-bale.org - "...It's funny. The impression a person gets listening to the Rant is that you're the biggest prima donna of all time. Maybe you are. But you're also a Hollywood leading man who's comfortable playing a supporting part or letting someone else be the most charismatic guy on the screen, as in 3:10 to Yuma. --- Yeah, Russell [Crowe] and I had the same amount of screen time, but he was definitely the scene stealer, and I have to say I enjoyed that. I find something fascinating about the quiet man in the background who has no desire to be the center of attention. And you know, as Russell's character starts to understand what my character is up to, the weight of our characters, I guess you might call it, starts to shift. He remains the alpha guy, but he also starts to appreciate the quest I'm on and to realize that it's going to kill me-that in the end I'm more of a lunatic than he is. - Thanks, Maria

News-Journal.com (Austin TX) - Old nautical terms have modern usage -- I was shelving some books the other day and opened up a couple of Patrick O'Brian's seafaring novels. Late in his life, the Irish author gained a great following for what is in effect a 20 volume novel that traces the careers and adventures of a ship's captain and a surgeon in the Royal Navy during the Napoleonic wars. Blu-ray.com: Cinderella Man review - "I'm beginning to think there isn't a leading role in Hollywood that Academy Award-winning actor Russell Crowe couldn't transform into Oscar gold. Even when he inadvertently stumbles onto the set of a mediocre film -- Virtuosity, Proof of Life, and A Good Year spring to mind -- he exudes an unwavering confidence and commitment to his craft, investing himself wholeheartedly in spite of any circumstances, challenges, or egos that stand in his way." - Thanks, Allison
The Independent: Fashion: Hark, what style is this? -- "When times get tough, designers get creative and flamboyant escapism is often the order of the day. But the autumn collections were more about high-church asceticism. Arcane, medieval shapes and styles were going on a pilgrimage to the end of the catwalk and back.... a nd at Fendi, they sported leather breastplates teamed with Maid Marian-style snoods. It chimes perfectly with the unveiling of Russell Crowe in his new role as Ridley Scott's Robin Hood. In shots released recently, he looks not unlike a model for the cult designer Rick Owens, in tunic and wrist gauntlets, and has reportedly lost more than four stone for the part. - Thanks, Christine

Den of Geek Blu-ray review of LAC: From the stars right down to minor supporting roles, everyone excels in their role. Which is even more impressive considering that there are 80 speaking parts in the movie. Curtis Hanson's direction and Dante Spinotti's masterful cinematography capture the feeling of 1950s LA magnificently both in daylight and twilight. Warner's have done well with the Blu-ray release; the transfer isn't perfect but it's pretty damn close. There are a few faults with the picture here and there but nothing too distracting - especially given that the fact the movie's over ten years old. Drawing on these faults would just be nit picking, as the attention to detail on display, at times, really is quite remarkable. The sound's also very good, you really feel every punch land and I have to admit that the gunfire made me jump on more than one occasion. - Thanks, Allison

The NY Times - related - Angels and Demons review: "...This movie, without being particularly good, is nonetheless far less hysterical than “Da Vinci.” Its preposterous narrative, efficiently rendered by the blue-chip screenwriting team of Akiva Goldsman and David Koepp, unfolds with the locomotive elegance of a Tintin comic or an episode of “Murder, She Wrote.” Mr. Howard’s direction combines the visual charm of mass-produced postcards with the mental stimulation of an easy Monday crossword puzzle. It could be worse."

The House Next Door Blog: Understanding screenwriting #25 (SOP) -- "...Pitt pulled out at the last minute, and Russell Crowe, who pulled out of Nottingham, took over the role of Cal, with no time to lose the weight he had gained for Body of Lies. There was also no time, because of the Writers’ Guild strike of 2007, to rewrite it specifically for Crowe. It is one of his best performances. Hmm, what should that tell movie stars? His face is alive on the screen every second, in a way that Pitt’s never is, especially when Pitt the Movie Star rather than Pitt the Character Actor shows up. Variety: Stars no longer insure box office profits -- Buyers weigh wider set of factors for film choices -- Jere Hausfater, CEO of Essential Entertainment, agrees it's slim pickings these days. "We are in a challenging environment," he says. "There are very few bankable stars these days. Some examples that come to mind are Will Smith, Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Tom Hanks, Russell Crowe, as well as Ashton Kutcher in a comedy, and Jason Statham in an action film. On the female side, the obvious names are Angelina Jolie, Julia Roberts, Drew Barrymore, Jodie Foster and a few others. (These actors) will always have the pre-sale juice point. Unfortunately, the list is not growing substantially. The presale box is getting smaller and so are the amounts buyers are willing to pay." - Thanks, Steph

Wales News: THEY can rub shoulders with the biggest of Hollywood stars, yet they will never win a Bafta, and the only people who will recognise them on the silver screen will be their friends and family.... in Wales this weekend, hundreds of hopeful television and film “extras” will be jostling for a walk-on role alongside Hollywood stars Russell Crowe and Cate Blanchett in the latest Ridley Scott movie. Amazon Daily; Nick Cave's Gladiator ambitions - Cave's biggest challenge was how to deal with the fact that [spoiler alert!] Russell Crowe's central character, Maximus, dies at the end of the first film - so he dispensed with realism altogether in favor of turning Maximus into a war-mongering version of Dr. Sam Beckett from Quantum Leap. According to film blog Gone Elsewhere, who reviewed the script, it features "a damned Maximus paying for his transgressions against the Gods by serving as an eternal warrior," meaning he has to fight in medieval and modern wars such as World War II. Towards the end there's a "highly-ambitious, crocodile-packed battle sequence," and a final shot shows Maximus working in the Pentagon.
Translation of that Dutch article posted the other day: "Russell Crowe was in Amsterdam the weekend of 1st and 2nd May. The 45 year old Australian was not here to promote his film State of play, which will soon be released, but instead to have a real party in the Dutch capital.
The actor, who received an Oscar for 'Gladiator', was out on the town both Friday and Saturday, and, so it was said by Amsterdam Regional television AT5, didn't arrive at his hotel until 7 am on Saturday morning. On Sunday afternoon he flew back to London already. Perhaps Crowe had every reason to really 'let go’.
The actor is at present busy filming 'Robin Hood' in London and according to the latest rumours the script is being rewritten at present - whilst filming is in full swing! This rumour is being spread by the not very reliable American website Showbiz 411, and therefore cannot be confirmed. However, if it is true it would explain why Russell would welcome a change of scene from London. Crowe will star in a couple of week’s time in 'State of Play ', next to Ben Affleck and Helen Mirren. This film was released last week in England, where it reached the number 1 spot. This is remarkable, as the film is an adaptation of a British TV series, and usually the Brits don't like it much when the Americans take their ideas and turn them into their own.
State of Play will be in Dutch cinemas from 18 June." - Thanks, Avril

Comics Gear Live: "...Okay, so Master And Commander: The Far Side Of The World isn’t a Star Trek movie either, but watch it again, more closely. I think the banter between Russell Crowe’s Capt. Jack Aubrey and Paul Bettany’s Dr. Stephen Maturin is very Trek-like. Crowe appears to be channeling an inner Kirk and Bettany comes off as a Spock/McCoy mash-up. But it’s the scenes where the two ships duke it out on the high seas, dodging each other in the mist, using their experience to be innovative when their technology fails them, that recall the end of the Wrath of Khan. Watch it again and substitute spacecraft for the ships and planets for the island and see if you don’t agree. Bonus: I’m not the only one who thinks that, either. Check out what this guy has to say. Then the gang over at Michael D’s Region 4 DVD Info Page weigh in with this: “Imagine an episode of Star Trek being acted out with the cast, costumes, and sets of Hornblower.” Exactly." - Thanks, Allison

Variety: Tenderness review - "...With no real life of his own, Cristofuoro follows Eric's trail. Via a couple of overly coincidental, and increasingly absurd, near-meetings, the cop is disturbed to discover his quarry is not traveling alone. What began as an atmospheric drama withers into a series of story tics and gimmicks that relies too heavily on Jonathan Goldsmith's subtly disturbing score. A climactic twist is poorly realized and robs the pic of a last chance to distinguish itself before a predictable denouement.

USA Weekend: Tiny mention of Robin Hood in this interview with Kevin Durand. It's mostly about his character in Wolverine. - You are playing Little John in the upcoming Robin Hood movie, though. We've only seen Russell on the set so far, but it sounds neat. What can you tell us? - It's Little John like you've never seen him before. He's the baddest dude and it's so much fun." - Thanks, Cindy

Roger Ebert - Soloist Review: "Explaining madness is the most limiting and generally least convincing thing a movie can do," Pauline Kael once wrote. "The Soloist" doesn't even seem sure how to depict it. Unlike Russell Crowe's mathematician in "A Beautiful Mind," whose madness was understood through his own eyes, the musician here seems more of a loose cannon, unpredictable in random ways. Yes, mental illness can be like that, but can successful drama? There comes a point when Lopez has had enough, and so, in sympathy, have we. - Thanks, Mary D

Interview Magazine: Robin Wright Penn by Francis Ford Coppola - "COPPOLA: Well, if I can learn something, then I’m happy. [laughs] So you just did this film, State of Play, with a lot of interesting actors—notably Russell Crowe. PENN: I really loved working with Russell. He’s a very present actor. You don’t feel stymied in any way when you’re in a scene with him. It actually was sort of like dancing" - Thanks, Jan

From the "Daily Telegraph": Russell Crowe is in hiding before shooting Robin Hood - ...."I have a lot of responsibility when I work with him (Scott), I have a lot of creative space when I work with him and there's nobody that I've experienced who creates a world, a complete world, better than Ridley Scott. "That's what I enjoy. There's a certain part of me that was a theatre actor, (who) appreciates being on a Ridley Scott set because I am a time traveller and I can live in a different world and that's a great privilege and I really enjoy it. He is a master of cinema and I'm lucky to know him professionally in the way that I do." -- Thanks, Minnie, Steph
Careful man, there’s a beverage here! (5 Cocktails, 5 Movies) - Cinderella Man in particular strikes a chord, the true story of “Gentleman” Jim Braddock, a 1930s boxer whose ascendance as a heavyweight champion was harshly derailed by an injury during the Great Depression. Crowe was born for this role, and Braddock’s desperate, hardscrabble comeback makes a great story on its own, but all the mo’ betta’ punctuated with an other-worldly turn by Paul Giamatti as his plucky, googly-eyed manager (“You trying to punch ‘im or pork ‘im?”). This is an Insomniac Theater favorite, though there’s invariably the risk of the missus standing at the top of the stairs, calling down, “Are you crying again?” [Wipes nose on sleeve] “No!” - Thanks, Maria
