PittsburghLive: Mystery, Pittsburgh -- Academy Award-winning actor Russell Crowe attended the game with his son, who donned a baby blue Penguins sweater and waved to the crowd when they were shown on the video board during the opening period. Crowe, who won the Best Actor Oscar for "Gladiator," is filming "The Next Three Days" in various parts of Pittsburgh. He is popular among hockey fans for his starring role as an aging hockey player in "Mystery, Alaska." Crowe was not available for comment, though he met several players after the game. "We just talked about him coming here, how long he is here in Pittsburgh and where he spends his time," captain Sidney Crosby said, adding that he was unsure if Crowe would accept an invitation to skate with the Penguins. - Thanks, Kris C, Allison

From Robin: Well, Russell was at the Penguins-Devils game last night. They played scenes from Gladiator and Mystery, Alaska before showing him and asking the crowd for a great Pittsburgh welcome. It was great to see him there, but it reminds me that he was at a Penguins-Devils playofff game back in 2001 (where he wore a Penguins jersey!) and I think the Penguins lost that night too. Oh well, doesn't matter, he's welcome at the games anytime!

On the NY Times Editorial page today, an interesting and eye-opening op-ed article about women in the work place, The Mismeasure of Woman, written by a former WSJ staffer, Joanne Lipman. In the article it is mentioned that in the film The Insider, the WSJ reporter who won a Pulitizer prize for reporting on the tobacco scandal is played by a man, even though it was a woman, Alix Freedman, who wrote the story in the newspaper and won the prize. (Review in the WSJ)

Rare Book.net: Russell Crowe and Robin Hood 2010 Movie - Russell Crowe dons the role of the legendary action figure who had endured the popular mythology and is the imagination of anyone who craves for adventure and righteousness. Cate Blanchett (Best Supporting Actress, The Aviator, 2005) takes over the role of Robin’s love interest in this movie adaptation. There have been rumors that Robin in this latest Avatar would be set in a futuristic London. With a star cast that boasts of Russell Crowe and Cate Blanchett and supporting crew like Danny Huston (Wolverine, 2009) and Kevin Durand (Walking Tall, 2004), this Action- Drama is on its way to be the biggest blockbuster of the summer of 2010. - Thanks, Layne

Ohio.com Entertainemnt Q&A: Q: While traveling on an international flight a couple of years ago, I watched a movie starring Russell Crowe as a British financier who inherits a house in France. While not a major hit, the movie was entertaining and humorous. At one point during the film, a colleague asks Crowe for advice and he replies ''Never pet a burning dog.'' What is that movie and was it released in the U.S.? A: You are most likely thinking of A Good Year, a comedy starring Crowe and directed by Ridley Scott. Crowe plays a businessman who inherits a French vineyard. It was released in U.S. theaters but was not a hit. It is available on DVD. - Thanks, Kris C

The Pittsburgh Channel: Small car accident on set of N3D. PITTSBURGH -- Russell Crowe is no stranger to performing his own stunts, but the "Gladiator" star was involved in his own real-life fender-bender Wednesday afternoon. Actor Russell Crowe was filming a scene for 'The Next Three Days' when a van he was riding in was clipped by a Pittsburgh fire truck. Crowe, in Pittsburgh filming "The Next Three Days," was in a van shooting a scene for the film when it was clipped by a Pittsburgh fire truck. Crowe and his co-star, Elizabeth Banks, both emerged from the van unscathed. "The Next Three Days" is being directed by Paul Haggis ("Crash") and also stars Liam Neeson ("Schindler's List," "Star Wars") and Olivia Wilde ("House"). Adapted from a French thriller, the movie's plot has Crowe playing a college professor who tries to free his wife from jail for a murder that she swears she didn’t commit. Movie scenes have been shot in the Allegheny County Jail's lobby and visiting area. - Thanks, Cindy, Steph

Express Night Out: Sweet Revenge: 'Law Abiding Citizen' & the Top Five Revenge Films (Scroll) - The greatness of this film can be captured in a few simple lines from Crowe: "My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions, loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next." You shouldn't need any more proof than that. - Thanks, Allison

The Tartan.org (Carnegie Mellon): Hollywood comes to Pittsburgh -- The film industry has also found refuge in Pittsburgh. Just recently, Academy Award-winning actor Russell Crowe visited Pittsburgh to film scenes for his latest project, The Next Three Days, at the Allegheny County Jail. In a screenplay written by Paul Haggis, Crowe plays a man whose life is turned upside down when his wife is accused of murder. So far, directors have named Pittsburgh the project’s sole filming location. But this is not an acting debut for the city. Apart from being a popular film setting itself, many of the films which ostensibly take place in Washington, D.C., Memphis, Tenn., or New York City were actually filmed right here in Pittsburgh. - Thanks, Layne

[Snarky] - The Australian: Corks pop as more big studio heads fall --- BY the same token, rumours floating around town have it that the budget for Russell Crowe's retelling of the tale of Robin Hood, in which Our Rusty stars as the hero, has blown out to $US300 million ($340m). Even given the largesse of Hollywood, that's a serious number and represents a lot of all-you-can-eat buffets for Crowe, who is becoming Brando-esque in all the wrong ways, given his appearance in State of Play and Body of Lies. But is that number real? Or is it just mischief being spread by a rival, given that the studio behind Ridley Scott's film is Universal? - Thanks, Steph - [The Australian might want to look at this picture!]

Variety: Great news!!! - Liam Neeson has joined “The Next Three Days,” the Paul Haggis-directed thriller for Lionsgate. The picture began photography last Friday, with Russell Crowe playing a teacher whose wife (Elizabeth Banks) is arrested for a gruesome murder she says she didn’t commit. Several years of incarceration leaves her suicidal and he plots to break her out. Neeson plays an ex-con who has broken out of jail multiple times, has written a book about it, and shows the teacher how it's done.  Brian Dennehy, Lennie James, Olivia Wilde, Aisha Hinds (“True Blood”), Daniel Stern and RZA also star in Haggis’s first film for Lionsgate since “Crash.” Haggis wrote the script, which is based on the 2008 French film “Pour Elle.” - Thanks, Maria [Ed Note: If you want to see the original you can pre-order it from Amazon UK - Title "Anything For Her." It should be available in late October] - Thanks, Steph, Allison, Maria

As mentioned in the Battering Ram story from the other day --- Allan, the chief executive of the Clanranald Trust, a battle re-enactment group, first met Crowe while filming Gladiator in 1997, when he played a bearded German barbarian who is seen in the finished film raising up the severed head of a Roman negotiator. While waiting to film one scene, the pair discovered a shared passion for American motorcycles and became friends. ---- Allan (head of group that got the ram), a piper with Saor Patrol, [video] added that Crowe has already asked them to play support for his own band, The Ordinary Fear of God, when it tours the UK next year.

From Jo A in Pittsburgh: "This isn't a secret because they just announced it on the local morning news.
