9/9/04 -- Gordon jumps into Miramax role

Exec upped to prod'n prez - By DANA HARRIS

As Harvey Weinstein faces an uncertain future, he has appointed Jon Gordon to help oversee it.

Weinstein announced Wednesday that he's promoted Gordon to co-president of production at Miramax Films.

Now based in Los Angeles, Gordon will oversee creative aspects of production and development with Meryl Poster, who has been co-prexy of production since 1998, most recently with Bob Osher.

Poster has been on sabbatical throughout the summer but is expected to return to work by the end of this month.

Gordon, who reports to Weinstein, will continue to serve as the supervising executive on specific projects. He's expected to spend at least one week each month in New York.

Gordon most recently was Miramax's executive veep of production. In that post, he earned a rep as the company's go-to guy for challenging or difficult productions.

That job description also fits the current state of affairs at Miramax, which remains largely unsettled as Weinstein continues to hash out his future with Disney chief Michael Eisner.

It's believed that Gordon and Weinstein intend to continue working together in the near term, whether or not Miramax continues in its current format.

For now, Gordon is overseeing Miramax's last production of 2004, "Derailed," which begins shooting next month in London; Clive Owen and Jennifer Aniston star.

Also ramping up is an adaptation of Elmore Leonard's "Killshot." John Madden's interested in directing, but no deal has been made.

Gordon also is looking forward to getting Kevin Smith's draft of "The Green Hornet." Smith has been unabashed in admitting he's uncertain if he wants to direct the big-budget franchise, but Gordon said he doesn't expect a final decision until Smith has turned in the script.

Gordon joined Miramax in 1992 as Weinstein's exec assistant. Among films he's overseen are "Flirting With Disaster," "Chasing Amy," "Good Will Hunting," "Dogma," "The Yards," "Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back," "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind" and "Jersey Girl."
